Pope to make moral case for action on climate change

COULD one man succeed in spurring decisive action on global warming? Pope Francis, leader of the world's 1.2 billion Catholics, plans to release a ground-breaking appeal to combat climate change, in a major document called an encyclical.

Its message will be spread to congregations around the world by Catholic clergy, mobilising grassroots pressure for action ahead of the key UN climate summit in December in Paris. The encyclical may be published as early as March, and may be couched in terms of the biblical parable of the Good Samaritan, which teaches that we have responsibilities to our fellow humans.

I thought an encyclical was a big deal in the Catholic church. I'm just happy to see any important figure address this issue. A significant number of deniers in this country are Catholic and hopefully the Pope's concern may change that.

When a moral imperative bumps up against the hip pocket nerve, the hip pocket wins most of the time.
That's why the opponents of clean energy production from renewables keep bleating about increased costs and higher prices.

I hope the encyclical makes a difference. It should strengthen the message from the pulpit.

That is very nice, but he recently announced that he still wants to continue the ban on any form of birth control other than abstinence & rhythm. He has done nothing to reverse the earlier edicts that American nuns are doing too much to help the poor & sick, & not enough to reinforce bans on birth control, abortion & expressing sexuality, & should be reined in.

I will say good for him, but I also think birth control should be included in preserving the planet.
