The grandson of former U.S. President Jimmy Carter and former first lady Rosalynn has revealed that the couple are at peace after he was moved into hospice care.

Josh Carter said that the loving couple were always the 'entertainers' but now things are quieter but they're both still very much in love and 'holding hands.'

Jimmy Carter ceased medical intervention on Feb 18 aged 98 and entered hospice care at his home in Plains, Georgia to 'spend his remaining time at home with his family.' Three months later it was revealed Rosalynn, 96, has dementia.

Josh, 39, told the outlet that 'there's always somebody at the house' to keep his grandparents company, more often than not, one of their kids.

Although Jimmy and Rosalynn aren't as active as they once were they're still aware of what is going on around them and 'fully understand' the well wishes and love they've received.

As for Rosalynn, Josh explained that she is aware of her dementia diagnosis but 'still knows who we are, for the most part, that we are family,' he explained.

'My grandmother is still able to form new memories,' he added.

Josh said he cannot begin to understand how hard it has been for Jimmy to watch his wife of 77 years lose some of her memories but said: 'I think the beautiful thing is that they're still together.'

'They are still holding hands... it's just amazing. Odds are I'm gonna lose my grandfather before my grandmother,' Josh said. 'He's in hospice care and she's not, and it's just math.'

Josh said the whole family are focused on showing their love and appreciation and is using the time he has left to keep happy memories alive.

What a beautiful couple, and I have admired Carter for all the good things he has done after his presidency! However, the second picture did not seem real because of the positioning and size of the people in the "room."

President Carter did some pretty terrific things after leaving Washington and working with Habitat for Humanity, but I lost a lot of respect for him after he denigrated the sitting President. During my time in the military, I fought under the orders of President Clinton, but never chastised or criticized President Clinton for some of the ignorant things he committed in office or even some of the moves he made on the battlefield that I disagreed with.

It’s an unwritten rule that retired presidents do not undermine the orders or the methods that are being used by a sitting president. It’s all done out of respect. Over the years, many men have not had the respect they should have received because someone else broke the rules. I know it’s hard to bite your tongue, but some of us learned.

I worked alongside Jimmy Carter in northern Georgia through the eastern part of Tennessee (Appalachia) when we fixed up many homes. One very elderly lady had her front porch completely collapsed. Jimmy asked if I could oversee building and replacing the porch if he gave me 2 men to help. I told him we could have it done in a day, if the materials were available.

Lowes donated the materials and delivered them on a Monday afternoon. By Thursday, the porch was completed. He said he never saw 3 men work so hard. I corrected him and told him it only took 2 of us to build the new porch. What I didn’t tell him was that we worked 16 hour days to get it done. Jimmy was a good man to work with, but he was very slow.

I think it's very real. The Carters have shrunk now in their 100th years.... and the Bidens are tall people...

Thanks for sharing that about Carter! I also participated in the Habitat for Humanity project through our church. Interesting about Carter denigrating "the sitting President." I also think it was not right for him to do that. However, presidents can be complex people with different sides to them and on different levels.

Your interacting with the president in building the front porch was wonderful to read! Thanks again for sharing!

I liked the man. He was both sincere and honest. He spoke in a manner that you knew he was being very truthful.

I visited Plains, Ga, after the Carters left office. Apparently, Carter just left the country store. All the people there told me to go up to the Carter home, knock on the door, and the ex-President would be happy to see me. I drove up to the house, it was nice house, but no mansion. No guards, no gates, etc. I just didn't have the guts to go up and knock at the door. I've always regretted that.
Regardless of what you think of his time in office, he wasn't the usual political hack, he is Mr. Integrity.
