Price increases

I stopped at the grocery outlet after going by my workplace to feed the established ferals there.

I got these 3 items for $4.96. Good deal. I will go to WINCO Foods later. And I'll pay, pay, pay even though they have good prices. I also need cat food for the ferals.

For health and cost, your best bet by far is to buy foods that are naturally GF: oatmeal, rice, beans, corn, cornmeal and potatoes plus fruits and veggies.

Instead of candy bars, you can try making granola bars using oats, dried fruit or chocolate chips, nuts and sugar, honey or corn syrup. A whole lot cheaper and none of those pesky chemicals.

My son is vegan and DIL is GF vegan, so I know whereof I speak. After a GF year, DIL is slowly reintroducing gluten to her diet. GF is so limiting, especially when combined with being a pretty strict, though not insanely-strict, vegan. (She doesn't balk at an occasional egg as an ingredient, milk solids in chocolate, etc.)

I don't know how strict your son is, or his motivation for GF or veganism. Son and DIL are vegans because of animal cruelty issues. I'm plant based for personal health, planetary health and animal cruelty issues.

Oh, I do buy foods that are naturally GF. The ones that aren't are foods that my son wants to eat, as well.

Candy bars? I must have them! My monthly average is about 1/4 of a bar. However, in the past few weeks, I've been eating about 3 every couple of weeks. This sudden desire will fade soon, and I'll be back to rarely eating candy.

My son is a strict vegan, due to animal cruelty. He is GF because he feels sick when he eats foods with wheat or bran in them.

It's been an adventure cooking for him. So far, he likes everything. During the weekend, I'm going to try making GF scalloped potatoes, since there is no cheese in them. My son isn't fond of vegan meat and cheeses. He loves lentils, though.

It is so weird that in the 70s when I was starting out in life there were oil problems and i think over 10% inflation plus 10% unemployment, and now when I retired everything falls apart again. Though at least there isn't a lot of unemployment. When I was running tools before I retired to see if I had enough to retire, almost all the projections were okay, there were just a few that my money would fail before the expected 'end of plan', I'm still hoping this will all resolve, hopefully within a year.

No. I mean, yeah, that's a big part of it, but if we hadn't protested against completing projects like the Keystone Pipeline, and the campaigning president hadn't kept the promise to shut them all down, we'd have much lower gas prices today and the war in Ukraine wouldn't have such a significant impact.

People who didn't want the pipeline and fracking and that should stop complaining.

To the rest of us, though....as you were: 😭 $$$🔥!

Since you are in the suburbs of Los Angeles, I'm sure you are already seeing more than most the effects of climate change. You've had no rain, and the fire season in California seems to start earlier every year.

We saw it in Texas with the 2021 freeze and power outages that killed multiple people. We've also had no Spring this year. We went right into 90+ degree temps in May and will be in the triple digits later this week. This doesn't usually happen until July.

I'm in your camp. We both drive little 4-cylinder cars, and would go electric if there were any vehicles to be purchased these days.
 
food has pretty well doubled in cost, its now about $85 to fill my truck.
that right there costs an easy $250 for food gas for one person.

tourist towns have no workers because the working people cant afford the rents.
i know about 10 guys working trees and oil linemen who now travel ONE HOUR EACH WAY
for work cuz this is the cheapest area they can find to crash for a few hours each nite.

this has happened across all tourist areas in the 'us'. they have no workers who can afford to
sleep in the same town they work for slave wages in. even if the wages are decent...you cannot
make $3000 a month And pay $3000 mos in rent.

it makes no sense and it is our ruin.
 
I don't see what all the crying about price interests is about? Traveling for the last 3 days on our highways, I see dozens and dozens of big travel trailers being pulled around. There is still that crowd that wastes gas driving around McDonald's or Tim Hortons rather than make the coffee at home. Only real change I see is that there are a lot of smaller cars then there were when I traveled this same route 9 months ago. Maybe some folks are finally "getting the message" from Monsieur Trudeau. That message is that "the hard times are only going to get harder." As always, Justin says, "I'm Sorry."

As anyone whose been to a gas station or food store knows, inflation continues. CPI says 8.6% per year with everything they figure in, but the report states gas is up 50% in the past year, and groceries are up 12%. That's about what I'm seeing.

Fortunately, DH & I moved to a plant based diet 8 years ago but we still need to feed our elderly dog some meat every day and my eyes pop at meat prices.
 
I spent over 90 dollars at WINCO Foods and basically got nothing. Just over 40 of that was cat food including some Fancy Feast for my girls. I did get two cases of Bubly soda because my stomach is bothering me again and I'm taking a coarse of Prilosec.

@StarSong I'd like to try making some things like that myself but everything I cook, comes out like crap. I used to like the Nature's Burger dry burger mix. They discontinued it of coarse. It wasn't that expensive and I could get a good 6+ burgers out of the box.

I've tried making some oat based burgers on my own. I've watched a number of YouTube videos but mine didn't turn out great. I was actually looking at some vegan burger videos last night. I'll try again.

There are people being greatly affected by the prices.

However, I can't completely disagree with your post. Some jerk speeds by me this AM in his souped up noisy car only to sit at the red light as I did. I only arrived a few seconds later. You are right about the drive throughs and the coffee drive ups. With all the good coffee creamers available, those coffee places are not necessary except as an occasional treat which I don't even do. I'm using Califia Barista blend oat.

DH & I have broken the burger habit and only eat them when one of our kids is hosting a BBQ. Then we'll bring Beyond or Impossible burgers - whatever's kicking around in the freezer. Same with other meats and most dairy. We've avoid them and eat other things.

Over the years I've learned that trying to mimic an omnivore diet is pure folly. Sure, some products are pretty good (notably Tofutti cream cheese and sour cream) but fake deli meats are gross, fake cheeses are expensive, don't taste good and generally don't melt well.

Turns out I'd much rather eat a couple of baked potatoes topped with homemade tofu and steamed broccoli than a burger anyway. There's an old plant based diet thread here: https://www.seniorforums.com/threads/eating-a-plant-based-diet.35480/page-2.

We can revive it if you're interested in swapping tips and successful recipes. :love:
 
@StarSong Believe me, I'd have no successful recipes. :D At least at this point. I will check out the threat, thank you.

I actually don't like most of the products that try to totally mimic meat. I've never tried the beyond and impossible products. A couple of exceptions would be Smart Dogs brand hot dogs and just about any plant based breaded tender like Gardein. I liked those grain type burgers. And they are getting harder to find as the imitations are taking over. I like burgers. Anything that utilizes bread, I'm in.

Decades ago. Meanwhile, we need to suck it up when gas prices fluctuate. And the gov't needs to get the frack out of the way when intelligent people come up with great new ways of creating eco-friendly fuels.

I saw a study that showed data - well, it was a chart showing a rise in air pollution almost exactly equal to a rise in mental illness and violence.
 
I would rather go back to the mid 70s, when there was a gas crisis. I was just a teenager with my first car. I sat in those lines and paid those prices. Was the only thing I was aware of or had to worry about. I did not have a clue about what adults were worrying about. Ignorance can be bliss. I wish I still had that little ford pinto.

Have you ever had a Bueno bar? OMG...they are SO good! Reminds me of a Twix and Kit Kat, two of my favorites, combined. My son shared one with me, haven't had one since only because the local supermarket I shop at doesn't have them. Reading through the posts and mentions of gas stations, it just occurred to me to check the mini mart at our neighborhood gas station...they may have them.

oh i believe that. everyone i know across the west is having awful allergy issues due to dust heat and blowing
dirt. the air is saturated with crap.
i get real pissy when im hot and having to get things done. i keep enough water on hand to douse myself and my shirt.
even my head at times. i dont care i just need to feel wet, other than hot.
