Prison officers have been ordered to stop calling criminals 'convicts' on the grounds it is 'offensive'.

More politically correct nonesense about not offending criminals. Wonder how long they would keep talking this garbage if they got a knife in their ribs or were hit over the head with a steel pipe?

Yap! Everyone is offended about everything. It's another one of those First World "problems." Like I said before, we really need a war! What ever happened to common sense?
I know you are frustrated but please reconsider calling for a war to solve our problems! You, in North America have fought bravely in some but were never the victims like Asians, Africans and Europeans! I know war tends to unite people but at what cost to others! If you had bombs raining down upon your head in your youth you'd be done with wars .. forever!

Civil servants at the Prison Service headquarters have also instructed warders to drop the phrase 'ex-con' for former prisoners - and refer to them as 'persons with lived experience' or 'prison leavers'.

The edict has left staff shaking their heads – at a time when jails are suffering from record overcrowding and their colleagues are leaving in droves.

A Prison Service spokesman said it was part of a 'clampdown' on 'inappropriate deviations' from its guidelines.

The national chairman of the Prison Officers' Association (POA) trade union was instructed to drop use of the words in an official letter from the Ministry of Justice agency.

"Prison leavers?" You've got to be kidding! It sounds like someone who decided to leave a hotel, or quit a social club. It's getting to the point where every other word is offensive to somebody!

I think calling the convicts "criminals" would be offensive, as some of them are innocent and have been wrongly convicted. But they still are convicts; anyone who has been convicted is a convict.

IMO, some people have too much time on their hands.

On one hand, the prison system (at least in America) needs to focus more on rehabilitation as opposed to humiliation. If you get to know the convicts, you will realize that most have already been humiliated from birth.

On the other hand, unless the convict accepts responsibility, they can not even start to rehabilitate. The ones that put the blame on someone else generally never turn things around.

In googling I found a New York City law about similar:

"The New York City Council, for example, no longer allows city correction officers to refer to people in jails as “packages” or “bodies.”"

That's the sad truth. A few years back a respectable, intelligent woman in Nova Scotia fell in love with a brutal serial killer in New Brunswick! It was quite a scandal when the long distance affair was revealed!
apparently that's very common. There's women galore who fall in love with serial killers they've never even met and spend years sending them money...
