Although around for years in various form like college campus police departments private police departments are starting to grow in certain areas and they can write tickets and make arrests.

Usually when a town needs a policing and can't/won't do it themselves they ask the county or state to come in. I've seen towns actually contract out policing to the county sheriffs. I've even seen towns use part-time police officers only giving a couple shifts a week or using them for vacation fill ins. But private policing? Right now in it's small form it's not that risky. When businesses want to sell their policing services en masse like prison services this is when the trouble really starts. There are already problems with many of these college campus police forces so a private force out in public wouldn't fair much better.

I'm kind of leery of a private police officer being able to give someone a criminal record or put them in the system. Private or local policing should be proactive only, not punitive.

Our county sheriff's dept. does contract policing for most of the cities in the county, in addition to patrolling the county areas.

The only private police department I have experience with is college campus police. AND yes... they can write real tickets.... mostly just parking tickets of which I have had a few.

Our Security department at the hospital also writes tickets.. but not "real" ones with fines.. just warnings and if you get too many... well... I'm not sure what happens.. lol!

Most all campus police are sworn fully accredited officers QS. What college are you talking about? I don't doubt you but I am surprised.

Here you have to have the minimum state requirement of 1400 hours of training and be certified for colleges or public transportation forces. In the article there is only a 40 hour training requirement which is a neighborhood watch requirement in many towns.

Wow! I can't speak for where you are but in the west campus officers attend the same police academy's as any other agency. Any one graduating class will have city police, sheriff, campus police graduates. Once sworn in they have full police powers.

They are state approved "academies" and certification programs which do in fact make them a certified officer any where in the state. Most academies/programs wind up being at the local community college. One gets all the training the municipal police get but you get it like a college student over time and not a recruit in a military setting 24/7. There have been discipline problems and since they can live life as a civilian stuff has happened to attendees while in the program(full background check before being accepted which wasn't updated until a department hired them). Some local departments when hiring them full-time make them attend the 24/7 academy although ironically have no problem hiring them part-time with their certifications.

*The 1400 hour is a dated approximation so I don't what the current number

Campus police? Over here police are called in the event of trouble. They do not have any permanent presence at any university or technical college. Parking is managed by on campus personnel.

Here they have a station right at the campus and investigate all manner of crime committed on campus, rape being one of the most common.

Rape can be a problem here too but it is still handled by the police department.
Universities may employ security guards, especially at night.

When I was attending evening lectures female students were advised not to walk to our cars alone.
Two of us would walk to one car, then drive to the second one.
Better to avoid being raped if possible than rely on the police afterwards.
