Prom Night???????

Tonight is "Prom Night" for seniors at my local high school. Now, if you're from my generation (1964), you got to drive dad's car. That was the real prize, if you were a guy. But things have changed. Today you have to have limos, which run into $ 5-9 hundred range. The girl's dresses cost thousands $. And on top of that it's raining (the just made hairdos). Horror!!!! Yeah, proms were a big deal in my time, too. The costs today is unbelievable and way out of hand. Proms today are really a have/have not affair.

Very, very expensive in my area too!

I wish that one of the sponsoring classes would say enough is enough and come up with a retro version of the prom with balloons and streamers in the gym, dinner at the local burger joint, etc... I think if one of the classes did it the rest would breathe a sigh of relief and join in.

My grandson just had his prom last week. We are a small town-no limos or fancy hotels for prom here. My grandson is a "sportshead". Sports are on his mind 24/7. He was voted Homecoming "King" but didn`t even want to go to the dance-just not his thing. He did end up going though. But prom turned out to be a blast. He had soooo much fun! A few pics.....

Mrs. Robinson, those photos are soooo cute!

As for the cost of Prom Night for many, *whew!!! I can't imagine paying so much money, but, I'm old and that's my excuse and I'm sticking with it.

Sweet picture!

I'm glad that they had a good time and made it home safely!

What a wonderful picture, they look great.

Oldest grandson had his Senior prom last weekend. Been a super student. Worked part time during his senior year and still carried a 4.0 gpa. Full ride scholastic scholarship to a university. We will be headed there for his graduation in a couple of weeks.

Granddaughter is attending her 8th Grade prom tonight!!! 8th Grade prom???? I don't remember having dances/sock hops until high school. Of course, I don't remember much of anything...........

I don't know how it progressed from the way it was in the 60s to what it costs nowdays. I wonder how many kids just can't afford to go. If it had cost that much back when I graduated (or the equivalent in 60s dollars), I certainly would not have been able to go.

I wore the dress my cousin had worn to her prom the year before (it was a lovely white sweetheart neckline thing with a long poofy skirt) and we went in my boyfriend's '54 Ford. We danced and carried on and got hamburgers and malts after the prom. Had a great time and it didn't cost much of anything, except for the hamburgers. My dad even kindly extended my curfew for that night so we could go for hamburgers with our friends. I was 16 and had argued that people who had graduated high school didn't need a curfew at all any more, but that didn't get very far.

Costs have definitely gotten out of hand. Heaven help the child who doesn't have a designer gown and a limo.

My mom made both of my prom gowns. Modesty was the main theme.....lol....and economy. Elbow length white gloves were de rigueur. The boys wore ill-fitting white dinner jackets; nobody ever wore a tux.....those were reserved for weddings. Everyone either went out to dinner after or to someone's party. Nobody had ever heard of hiring a limo or getting a suite at the beach for the night.

Funny story about one of our youngest daughter`s proms....we had only recently moved to the small town where we live now and it was customary for the kids to go camp out at the beach after prom. Having grown up twenty minutes from the beach, that wouldn`t have been such a big deal. But now we are over 2 hours away and it`s a windy, dangerous road to get there. No way were we going to let her ride in a car with some guy to get there. But then again,we didn`t want to ruin her life :p So hubby and I agree that she could go,but that we would be driving her to the beach. She wasn`t too happy about it but had to agree-or stay home. So we left at about 11PM,drove her to the beach, and slept in the car for the night, parked on the edge of the road. Worst night of sleep of my life lol. I remember a group of kids walking by and hearing one say "Whose car is that?" and someone answered "Oh,that`s just Shea`s parents..." Recently Shea went camping right near there with her husband and (almost teen) daughter. She mentioned on Facebook that they had driven by the beach where they stayed that night and said "Oh,by the way Mom,you and Dad will be happy to know that they put in a real nice, new parking lot there!" LOL

Update on PROM NIGHT.
Apparently, after Prom Night, and after spending thousand on dresses and limos; you have to end the night with fireworks. Quite a long and good show. Around here, any holiday is a great day for fireworks. In the summer, Saturday seems to be a holiday.

Something I've never told my daughter: The night of her first prom, we thought it would be fun to drive to the ballroom and watch all the kids showing up. After the prom started, we thought we might just sneak in through the hotel and "peek" through the door, knowing that if we got caught by her there would indeed be hell to pay.

As we were sneaking around, a hotel guard came up to us and said "prom parents?" We said yes and he lead us into a small room that had a one-way mirror into the ballroom and we were able to watch for a few minutes. There were already a few parents there doing the same thing and we all had a good laugh at how much trouble we'd be in if the kids found out about it.

Oooo! I forgot the long white gloves. I had those, too, and felt like the princess of something-or-other.

About 20 years ago, we were discussing proms at work and several people talked about how they regretted they never got to go to a prom. So we decided to have a "second-chance" prom.

A bunch of us ladies went to Goodwill and bought the gaudiest prom dresses we could find, long gloves, pointy-toed shoes, tiaras, etc. I had just lost a huge amount of weight and actually still had the formal I had worn on New Year's Eve 1967. It was sort of a loose A-line dress, so I managed to stuff my self into it (I looked like a sequined sausage, but what the hell....) The husbands and boyfriends declined to tux-up but we did get them to wear white shirts and ties. There was a contest for the ugliest corsage and best/worst dress.

We drank spiked punch and ate stale cookies. We took turns being the chaperone. It was held at the house of someone who had a huge rec room and she taped two flashlights to the ceiling and made a mirror ball by covering a beach ball with crumpled tin foil (OK, it left something to be desired during the spot dance).

Once again, to my great disappointment, I did not get elected prom queen. I did, however, get elected "Most Unlikely to Get Pregnant After The Prom", though. That's an honor I didn't get the first time.....one has to take one's victories as they come.

I'd love to do that again, but it's really hard to coordinate your dress with your walker and orthopedic shoes are hard to find in silver.

Great stories and photos. As I remember we didn't have a prom. The kids had no interest in having one which was strange. We ended up having a class picnic somewhere in New York State and had the greatest time ever. This suited me just fine,I much preferred a pair of shorts and bathing suit over a fancy dress any day.I do remember how strict they were about our clothes. We all met at school to board the bus but had to bring our shorts with us. No shorts or pants allowed going to and from the picnic not even on the bus.

I had a wonderful time at my Prom and then my boyfriend (now my Husband ) took me to his Prom. His Prom was much better than mine. They had it at a Ballroom and then they took all the couples to an after Prom party. It was held at a Popular restaurant called the Latin Casino, that had Popular performers there. The night we went Nat King Cole was the performer. His voice amazed me,and I still can remember after all these years what a Wonderful night it was.

That`s great!! Thanks for the morning chuckle! "Most Unlikely To Get Pregnant After The Prom" LOLOLOL

My granddaughter dated the same guy for 4 years. She has a purity ring and is quite sincere about holding onto the promise it stands for. She was interested in going to prom, but her boyfriend said he'd only take her if she promised to "put out" that night. End of their relationship! Sooooo proud of her!

I attended a back to prom night just last year with other people my age, it was held in Florida, in Siesta Key Villiage, what a great night had by all. But then, they did all those kind of wild back to the past events, including back to 70's, 80's and back to the future, but, I must admit, the prom night was the most fun.

Here's the dress I wore
