“Also: 700 members of the 82nd are at Joint Base Andrews and Fort Belvoir. 1,400 more soldiers are ready to be mobilized within an hour. Soldiers are armed and have riot gear. They also were issued bayonets—standard issue but some feel could be inflammatory,” he explained. “Some context: they were issued to the members of the 82nd deploying to Washington, D.C. – they were told to pack them in their backpacks. Members I spoke said bayonets are always on their packing list but given the context of the protests, it could be perceived in a bad light.”

Yeah, lets stab the protestors after all, where do they get off protesting?

I can't read it because it wants me to subscribe but, given the situation, if you were a cop there right now would you wanna be armed to the hilt to protect yourself or left in a position to get yourself killed by hundreds of people?

You really think a bayonet will help a cop if he's attacked by "hundreds of people?"

Well what did they use them for in the military in the wars years ago? That was a type of crowd control was it not? And please don't get nasty with me. I'm trying to be respectful and just asking a question.

A bayonet on a rifle acts as a last-ditch tool if a soldier's rifle and pistol are both empty & there is no time to reload, or if there is no more ammo. It may buy a few seconds IF there is only a single enemy soldier, who is also out of ammo. It was useful many years ago during black powder weapon days, when a gun only held ONE shot & reloading took a minute or two. Not a useful item today, with rifles holding 30 rounds or more in a magazine & a 1-2 second reload.

Well maybe they're using them as added protection. It's better than nothing. Isn't it?

Riot police already have "Less Lethal" weapons. A bayonet is a lethal weapon. Can you imagine police stabbing people instead of using rubber bullets & tear gas?

Not sure I'd want rubber bullets if my life was on the line like that. I know the idea is to keep the protestors at bay but, in certain situations the violence of it all can't be avoided.

One of the reasons why large gatherings should not be allowed is that people very quickly lose control of themselves and become a raging mob. A person in authority is seen as a target and is likely to be attacked. He should be able to defend himself in any way he can. Much better though, to have water canon and tear gas ready.

I don't think you are familiar with what constitutes a "Deadly Force" situation. People protesting is not a situation that justifies stabbing someone to death. Officers already carry firearms if needed, so what purpose would a bayonet serve?

As long as it stays non-violent. There must be a reason why they feel they need them. Otherwise why would they be told to use them? That makes no sense to me.

I understand deadly force and the need for it and when it's necessary. If their just protesting that's one thing.

This is not just protesting:
"Protesters began to throw rocks, bottles, and even shopping carts at officers who were blocking the entrance to Midway Target, according to KMSP. Police said multiple fires were also set as large crowds gathered in the city. "

Marci, what planet are you living on? As long as it stays non-violent? Who has been using violence in these horrific stories? The protesters, legally walking, singing holding signs, etc.? Or the police forces, who seem to have gone totally around the bend, and in some cases at least, are behaving like the worst kind of criminals?

No. Bayonets are completely inappropriate in crowd control. What are they gonna do? Thrust one of those things in sombody's gut because they don't like the sign the person is carrying? If you've ever seen bayonet practice, they don't use those things to gently prod.

In the Army, when told to fix bayonets, things were getting real serious. It meant the enemy was overpowering us or we were going to attack. Not a good situation either way. It was also a last line of defense if ammo was low or out.
I’m not sure if bayonets, in this case, was a good idea.

Nothing more than a reflection of the small-mindedness at the top.

How about rubber Bayonets to go with the rubber bullets?...
especially if there was paid actors to be the 1st stabbed and fall....
