Public schools verses Private Schools

Ditto, which is why I fought tooth and claw to go to public middle and high schools. Parochial schools in my day had almost no extra curricular activities which can be a plus for so many students. I just hated being hit and verbally abused for nothing when I was like six! It instills fear and self loathing in kids so small but the nuns dished it out on a daily basis, so if you were not a target on a particular day, maybe your friend was. Watching violence is just as hurtful. đŸ˜„
We had a 'brother' at my Catholic school who would intentionally and very deliberately turn his college ring facing downward and whack us on the top of our heads with it. We didn't eat the apple, for God's sake!

Private schools, especially the parochial ones, are not so hot in teaching one to think laterally. The private school kids I've known have tunnel vision when it comes to problem solving. Public school teachers throw us a kernel, and it's up to us to find the core. We learn quickly to do this.

Growing up, I attended public schools and really had no problems at all. I graduated high school in 1986. My son also attended public schools all of his life and came through it with zero issues.

1986! Isn't there a Kids Forum somewhere on the Internet?

Just kidding, we need the perspective of youth here. And by SF standards, you are young.

I have grave concerns about some of the people I see now "home schooling" which I guess might be considered a "private" school.

I did too as my daughter is likely going to do that.
Home schooling has come very far. There are communities and they get together because they all share those concerns.

I was fortunate to go through a quality public school system where 85% or so of the students went on to higher education. At my private university, perhaps 60% of the students had gone to private schools. I then went on to work in a public school system.

Private schools generally offer smaller class sizes, and they can pick and choose their students, whereas public schools must accept everyone. The degree of parental support tends to run higher at private schools, with nearly all parents attending conferences offered on their children at school. Getting parents to even attend conferences at some public schools can be a real struggle, since quite a few regard school to have value largely as free babysitting

I’d say “no way” to public schools these days if it were up to me, I could teach those brats better I feel and I’m not kidding. I’m here to tell you, 99 percent of the workforce doesn’t need Algebra, Trigonometry, Calculus nor Chemistry. How about preparing them for the “real world” and promote the vocations at least 50/50 with the other nonsense. Geez.

Learning is never nonsense. And people wonder why there are so many Jews in so many important positions although our population is negligible. It is because we are taught learning is never nonsense Since Birth! We are taught knowledge is never wasted and it is the one thing that can't be stolen.

It damaged and frightened me to see kids get pushed around by teacher. One kid was thrown clear across the room. Elementary school - public - was very terrifying for little me. I had my head slammed against a wall in second grade. Fear replaced any trust and there wasn't much to begin with.
If I'm not mistaken "caning" is still a legal form of punishment in British schools to this very day.

Come again?

Come again?
How can I help you? Did I make a grammatical error? Oops! I meant to say there are so few Jews, yet Jews obtain so many important positions due to early intervention in learning and the reasons for it. Sorry if I was unclear.

When did they stop caning in schools UK?

Corporal punishment was prohibited in all state-supported education in 1986. The prohibition was extended to cover private schools in England and Wales in 1998, in Scotland in 2000, and in Northern Ireland in 2003.

Well, either way- and I don't know how widespread this is- but I object to the voucher system.. we taxpayers should not have to help parents send their kids to private schools, our tax dollars should be going to improve public schools.

I agree in principle. But, if you were a parent with a child assigned to a terrible public school, you might like to have some other options.

When we went to school, we had to shoo away the dinosaurs grazing in the schoolyard. In the US, the better schools were privately owned. But that was in the distant past. Today, depending on where you live, both types of school can offer a good education. Some private and religious schools may allow biases that don't foster a well-rounded education, and public schools may lack the funds to provide an adequate education.

I went to public, private and parochial schools. I sent my kids to public and private schools. They all serve a purpose. My daughter needed specialized education not available in our school district, so the local school district paid for her to go to a private school. I'm not talking about "Christian academies" or other schools set up to avoid integration, I don't have any use for those.

" In 2019, parents in Jersey were banned from beating their children. Scotland banned spanking children in 2020. Corporal punishment became illegal in Wales in 2022. However, it is still legal in England."

I wanted to correct you (because your mistake seemed very obvious) but I just know if I put words into someone else's mouth I'm sure to get my face slapped. :censored:

Is this supposed to be a correction of what I posted? Because your original statement was about schools...

And therefore my response was about schools. If you had wanted a response on the general subject of corporal punishment, I would have answered differently.
