I just got off the phone with my sister. She got a call from Publishers Clearing House telling her she won One million dollars. They told her she had to send them a certified check for $7000.00 to claim her prize. Luckily she remembered a similar thing happening to me a few years ago. I have to admit I was very surprised she remembered, because she is in her 80's and her memory isn't always good. You can read about the scam on Snopes.

I'm glad she didn't fall for it. They go for people who might have memory loss or just changes to the aging brain. I've not got that one. I have got the sheriff or police are after me, over taxes or something else. I'd better talk to them or else. This was on my old cell. Nope. Just deleted.

Speaking of scams..
Since there's been a PSA.(on TV)..re: giving out your medicare info....warning to NOT
No more phone calls.

Don't know if this local or nationwide.
Anyone else notice?

The latest scam I’m getting is via e-mail thanking me for my order when I haven’t placed one. They are probably counting on curiosity to drive people deeper into the mail to click on a link which could install a virus, data miner, spyware, or malware. Some provide a number to call to cancel the ā€œorder,ā€ which would connect you to a scammer who would ask you for your information. Don’t ā€œbiteā€ on this one…

OH, come on! I'm 77 years old and I can remember the crap coming from this Publishing Clearing House when I was just a little kid. Those folks running this scam should be stood up before a cement wall and have a firing squad put them out of their misery!

Here's what the US Post Office says on the matter:

Protect yourself against scammers posing as PUBLISHERS CLEARING HOUSE

Publishers Clearing House (PCH) is a legitimate sweepstakes, but there are many scams that use
the PCH name and logo to take your money. Are you a lucky winner, or are you being scammed?
Follow these tips to be sure.

Make Sure It’s Really PCH
Contact PCH customer service directly at
1-800-459-4724 to confirm you’ve won.
Scammers will give you a phone number
that comes back to them for ā€œverification.ā€

As Seen on TV
The PCH Prize Patrol comes in person to
the door of major winners with balloons
and roses! You may be contacted by mail, but
PCH never calls in advance. If you receive
a call from someone claiming to be from
Publishers Clearing House — just hang up!
You haven’t heard from the real PCH.

Know the Official Rules
Check the rules prior to entering. Identity and
eligibility must be verified often via affidavit.
Winners must claim their prize within a specified
period of time, or the prize can be awarded to
another contestant.

Safeguard Your Personal Information
PCH will only ask for information to verify your
eligibility and to notify you if you are a winner:
date of birth, name, address, and email. No
other information is needed.

Winning is Always Free!
You never have to pay to claim a prize from PCH
or any other legitimate sweepstakes.

Call PCH
If you receive any communication
ostensibly from PCH that you believe
is a scam, please notify them
at 1-800-392-4190.

Publisher's Clearing House and the Reader's Digest Sweepstakes people, made my poor Alzheimer's ridden father's life a misery during his final years. They led him to think he was on some sort of short list, to the point of asking him for directions to his house. His final year he refused to come to my house for Christmas with the rest of us because he was afraid he wouldn't be home when they came with the prize.
