Puerto Rico is being wiped out by Hurricane Fiona.

They ARE OUR COUNTRY. They hold American passports. They are not visitors. Once they get to the states they have every right to do whatever they please and live anywhere they wish to live
I get it Pepper. But they are not in the country yet. That is a huge amount of people to plug into our economy.

Now they say the storm will grow stronger in open water to the N/W and is headed straight for Bermuda .

Another island that really can't take a direct hit !

Good luck too all.

They, for the most part, do not want to come here. If they did, nothing is stopping them.

After Maria, in 2017, I was working at a hospital, and we had an influx of people from Puerto Rico, with a specific chronic illness that required frequent life sustaining treatments. They were insured (Medicare) and NYC and some different agencies helped them with hotel rooms, etc. When things settled down. and the power was back on, they all returned to Puerto Rico.

It is hard to tell if Puerto Rico's problems are a result of failures of the U.S. Government or the Puerto Rican government. Congress has not acted on statehood and Puerto Rico has not requested statehood. Sure there were referendums and huge majority of voters, voted for statehood, but the people actually voted, represented less than 1/4 of the eligible voters.

In the meantime, Puerto Rico's population has declined nearly 20% over the past 20 years. The brightest and smartest have been leaving, decimating any future hope, imo. Puerto Rico appears destined to remain an unincorporated territory.

I was very concerned for my cousin, although her property wasn't adversely affected during Hurricane Maria. She stays gone half the time and was in the states when Maria hit, but let 5 of her friends stay at her house because she has a generator. I called her this evening and left a message. She texted me that phone service is sketchy. Thank God, she's alright and so far has not sustained any damage. She's not near the water and her home is of sturdy construction. My prayers to those who have been adversely affected. I certainly hope there's no loss of life like with Maria.

When the elites start abandoning their seaside compounds on Martha’s Vinyard and Hawaii, I’ll start worrying. Not a minute before.

I recently met an "elite" couple who had abandoned (sold at a loss) their seaside property in South Carolina, citing climate change.

Climate change is real. But the timing, extent, impact, etc. are all subject to data errors, future human action, and many other variables.

Re Puerto Rico: Maria happened five years ago. FEMA awarded $32 billion for disaster recovery and infrastructure repair. The FBI and the GAO are investigating where the money went.

The people of the island are getting a raw deal, but climate change isn't helping.

This is really sad. They are investigating. Five years have passed. I predict that the investigation will not produce the missing money. I think it is easy to GIVE the money, but it seems that accountability practices are either not in place or not followed.

This has not happened just in PR. It goes on all over. The greedy people see an opportunity and grab it.

I'm sure there is plenty of blame to go around. Giving them statehood, or independence, would not solve all problems but it should help. Give the people more power over their own destiny, and more responsibility for it.
