It seems that most Russians are supporting his efforts to restore Russia to its former glory. A difficult task and he may be overplaying his hand but it is understandable. Just think how Americans would feel if we become a second tier country. Methinks the Brits have always felt depressed since losing their position after WW2...

sometimes I wish we could just slip under the radar, and mind our own business..meddling in other nations' business doesn't appear to be too successful...Tony Blair has done a great job as Middle East peace envoy over the last 7years hasn't he?!

Sorry; off topic; Putin appears to be creating a new Czarist Russia; with an expansionist agenda , but he hasn't done too well in the Asian states; does he not remember Afganistan?
 

Methinks that Putin is relying on the US to be so distracted and worn down that he can make moves to restore some portion of the old Soviet empire. And to go further back, as you mentioned, some are even calling him Czar Putin...
 
As soon as that last batch of ex cold warriors leave office things will change. The problem now is that if he suppresses the religious sect too well when a revolution or freedom movement does come those religious sect will be the most motivated and their war will morph into another Bosnia.

I remember hearing after the Cold War and the Germanies were united the old east German communist block all but cried when they found out the government wouldn't give them everything.
 
That part of the world is like the middle east: there are so many fighting factions that the only way to have peace is with a stern (maybe brutal) ruler. Somebody way smarter than I once said that the Russian people are not capable of governing themselves.

I had read that the "stern ruler" line was an excuse to practice racism on a grand scale.

Of course, it was Tom Clancy who said it. But in a way, I think he was right. But you don't become the chief executive of a country as large and diverse as Russia by being a wimp. At least Putin is a man's man.
