  • The Queen may not be able to resume her public duties because of the coronavirus pandemic.
  • A royal biographer shares that "it would be far too risky for the Queen to start meeting people on a regular basis."
As we all probably know by now, the coronavirus pandemic will have a big effect on our lives even after quarantine ends. And while we don't know exactly what those effects will look like, royal biographers have a guess as to one of them: the Queen may never return to her royal duties.

According to The Sun, even though Queen Elizabeth "does not want to slow down or stop working," she will also follow "any official advice designed to protect people in her age category," meaning that she might not be able to resume her public life (attending engagements, meeting diplomates, giving speeches at events) for a long time.

And while the Queen's royal staff has reportedly cleared her calendar until the fall, royal biographer Andrew Morton tells The Sun that it may be unlikely that the Queen will return to her public duties at all. He says:

It’s terribly sad but I can’t see how the Queen can resume her usual job. The Covid-19 virus isn’t going away soon and will be with us for months, if not years. It would be far too risky for the Queen to start meeting people on a regular basis. She has always loved getting out and meeting people but she can’t take the risk. How can she carry out investitures, meet ambassadors, do walkabouts and visit places without meeting people at close range? If she gets the bug, it could be fatal and would put Prince Philip at risk.
He also suggests that Prince Charles might be the one to take up some limited royal engagements if the Queen can't. But hopefully, after this is all over, the palace can find a way for Queen Elizabeth to safely take on her royal obligations once more.

yes I know, none of us here can forget. It's like you in the USA with JFK... we all here remember exactly where we were when we heard Diana died...
I had been out on a dinner date and had just arrived home, my son had CNN on and I no sooner walked in the door when anchoman, Linden Soles said he'd stay on the air in reference to Diana's accident. We stopped in our tracks for even in the U. S. we knew he meant Princess Diana. It was shortly after that he announced that she had been killed in an auto accident in Paris. So, you see, Holly, I even remember some important overseas events such as that.

I think Her Majesty deserves to finally take it easy. She does apparently like to get out among people, but Charles should get himself carrying more of the responsibilities of chatting up the public and loosening up a bit.

I can't remember JFK because I was too young... but with Diana, I had fallen asleep on the sofa watching QVC, and woke at around 5am and saw that QVC had been replaced with a picture of the Union Flag, and all was silent...I thought the Queen Mother had died, so I quickly turned to the news channel, and there it was all the latest news telling us she'd been seriously injured in the crash but was alive, but Dodie Fayed was killed.... a couple of hours later they told us she'd died.

her funeral cortege came right past where I was working so I was able to go and watch it drive slowly past , and throw flowers on the roof..

When JFK was killed, I was 9 years old, and in school. We got sent home. I remember walking down the hall, past an empty classroom. The teacher was standing by the window, with her hands in her face, crying. That picture is as sharp as if it was yesterday.

With Diana, I remember i was evening when I heard that she had been in an accident and was "injured". In the morning I learned she had died.

Lovely photograph, Marie. I can see in it the curly headed child of yesteryear.

HM has served royal duties her entire life....as a princess during WW II; from the throne as British colonies exited into independence and formed the Commonwealth; throughout the cold war; into the digital era; into and out of the European Union. She's seen history unfold right in front of her.....with UK pm's coming to a weekly audience and reporting to her. This pandemic is probably the last major historic event she'll witness and she'll probably conduct her duties with the same grace and wisdom as she's always demonstrated. IMO.
I'm American but I love Britain and I will grieve and mourn at HM's passing.

I think the truth is the woman is 94 years old. It's nice to think of her forging ahead and all, but she is human. I think the woman has earned some time to herself, and her family. it must be tough being the only monarch most people have ever known.
She's certainly the only Monarch I've ever known, she was already Queen when I was born, so she's been a constant in my life. Hubs and I were just talking about her yesterday , and we think that although she's still being kept up to date with business , and having her weekly meetings with the PM .. I would hazard a guess that despite her great intentions to return as normal, at 94 years old, and after having an extended rest , where nothing is expected of her aside from taking a ride out in her grounds on her beloved horse.. that it will come to mean much more to her than she realises, and therefore if she does take up the reins (unintended pun) of Monarchy duties, she will be no more than a figure head within the royal family, and Charles and William and more will be expected to take more share than they do already

I think she's earned the rest after 70 years of work

Certainly she deserves a rest and she is getting one now. I think she will resume some of her duties that she is able to. I just can't imagine her sitting on the sidelines while someone else does it. She is a strong lady (look at her mother) and I wish her all the best. Either way, whatever she does she will be supported.
LOL...her mother never worked a day after Elizabeth came to the throne... :D
