Question about horses

I'm not a horse person. One thing I've always wondered about was why do you have to shoe horses? They've been happily running around for millions of years, and not one wore horseshoes. Why don't free range horses need horseshoes, but we shoe our horses?

GOOGLE 2022 says :

As mentioned in the previous section, racehorses can reach an average speed of 60 to 74km/h, however with a rider on their back this speed drops significantly to an average of 32 to 48,5km per hour. At top speed with a rider on it's back a horse can carry a rider for roughly 3km.

Horses hoves are like finger nails and are always growing. Domesticated horses aren't nearly as active as wild horses, and many live in confined enviroments, thus their hoves need to be trimmed because they don't wear down naturally. Shoes are a protective measure, many times there's no reason to shoe domesticated horses, really depends on how and where they're being used.
