Questions About Uber Transportation

I have a few questions about Uber Transportation.
I have visited the website.
I still have questions about this fairly new kind of transportation service.

When trying to download or upload the free app, the registration wanted financial/billing information to be applied when Uber would first be used.
I refused to provide such general information.
Does Uber have a free app that downloads or uploads without wanting such personal information?

I am intererested in learning the ins and outs of how Uber works.
In my area does it do multiple errand stops?
Is it a reliable transportation service?
How to contact a human being-for the purpose of my asking questions?

No, Uber and Lyft are both automatic billing. There's no "free" version. If you wish, contact a taxi service. They will talk to you and give an estimate of cost.

Or, you could get a "Preloaded" Visa/Mastercard and use that for Uber billing.

Have one particular credit card registered with them...

So, if "anything"...otherwise...should ever happen,.

I'd know exactly who...did what!!! 😉

My daughter travels a lot for her job, so she often needs to use either Uber or Lyft, and anytime that I h ave been with her, it has always been a good experience.
Some of the drivers are older, retired people who just want a little extra income, or even just something to do besides stay home. Some of them are college students putting themself through school, and some are housewives who wanted a part time job.

Whenever we have used Uber or Lyft, we always had interesting conversations with the drivers, they were prompt, and had very nice vehicles, and knew how to get where they were going.

You do have to have a credit/debit card, because you pay for it that way and not with cash. The company gets the money and pays the driver their commission. Another nice thing, is that you can see where the driver is coming from and where they are at on the way to pick you up, because there is a map in the app that shows where both parties are located.
It also tells you what kind of car and has a photo of the driver, so you can recognize them right away, even though they do not have a sign like a regular taxicab.

I have thought that some taxi drivers were taking the long way to get me where I am going to in order to keep the meter running longer; but with Uber, they get the specified amount and it is to their benefit to take the shortest route.

Regarding conversation or talking the website does mention some do's and do nots.
I will again check out the Uber website.
I just do not feel comfortable downloading an app that wants credit card/debit card payment information.
I have read/heard some unpleasant things about Uber and Lyft.

So far, I have learned that the free app cannot be downloaded unless one intends to register for an account.

One solution would be the Yellow Cab; if it is still in business.
It only accepts cash.

Thank you for your replies.

used all the time in Paris, occasionally in USA to airports.

Uber, Lyft, Requires credit card and mobile phone to get SMS vérification and driver notes.
Expect à long wait at peak times and in location far from a city center.

Had 3 "incidents" in California

1. on highway to airport, car ran out of gas, drivers had no money or credits card to refill, so I ,almost missed the flight

2.We départ and driver mentioned a nail in a tire " but it's OK"
Should have stopped and insisted on a different car. On the highway to the airport tire went flat.
Uber drivers have no capabilities for emergencys, couldn't call another car. Had to go on the highway and flag down a personal car kind enough time to stop.

3. Old driver enters parking lot wrong way. Stoops to pick me up. Parked SUV doesn't see the Uber, my leg is crushed as the SUV backstage up and doesn't see me or the Uber.

Finally beware most large airports make the Uber or lyft stop in some parking garage area, not by the gates and normal pickup exit.

The exact pickup point may be 20 minutes walk with your luggage.

Just my experience

Jon

Yup, got the same questions. And the same gripe about an automated answer system.
All Uber is a computer and some guy with a car, it'd be nice to know how reliable Uber is.

I use Uber fairly regularly. I never had anything negative happen.

This is the issue at JFK terminal 5. Pick up is not at a garage area, but at the far end of the terminal. No rhyme or reason, just a bunch of people corralled like cattle. Uber pick-ups there are a disaster.

I always take Uber to the airport but walk to the yellow taxi line to come home. It is much more civilized and well organized.

Uber cars are nice, late models, with pleasant drivers. My only complaint is the exorbitant surge pricing during bad weather or peak times.

An example of this is: A Wednesday morning, during rush hour, I needed to get to the far west side of Manhattan. It is about 2.5 miles away, and it was lightly raining and super windy. Uber had a wait time of 22 minutes (this is exceptionally long) usual wait time is 4-9 minutes. Charge would be $37.
I cancelled my request and went outside to find a yellow cab.

Metered charge was 12.50 without the tip. It is nice that Uber gives you the time, and charge BEFORE you confirm. That was the only bad thing I remember after many years of Uber usage.

Fuzzybuddy. Uber in the USA has over one million drivers .So its not just "some guy with a computer ". link. How Many Uber Drivers Are There in 2022? | Ridester.com UBER operates in over 60 countries around the world. JimB.
I'm not putting Uber down. It's their website is too automated. You can only ask a question that's already on their menu. When I came out of the hospital, I couldn't drive, plus I live in the sticks-everything is 30 minutes drive time away. I tried Uber. I tried to schedule trips, but no driver responded- understandable I am in the sticks.

Parents tell young girls, "Never go out with strange men",
now if you call for an Uber, it is always a stranger who gets
you into his car!

Mike.
You are assuming that the UBER driver will be a man. Many women also drive for UBER. JimB.

I know exactly what you are saying. My son lives a few miles north of Honesdale, Pa. Uber is practically not there. It makes sense for the drivers to work in more heavily populated areas where they are practically guaranteed to have passenger after passenger. And not in an area where everyone is car dependent.

I found that in the suburbs (not rural areas) Lyft is more popular. I am using Bergen County, NJ as an example. There were few Uber drivers, but more Lyft cars around. I am not sure why that is. I keep both apps on my phone. If no one is available from one, I try the other.

I did have one female Lyft driver in NJ. was a young stay at home mom, and when she received a call on her app that she wanted to take, she left her teenage daughter with the younger children and "went to work." She said it just gave her extra money in her pocket.

Can someone who likes/uses these services tell me why you prefer it over regular taxis???
A few reasons:
Going to the airport is a no brainer. They come right to the curb, no trying to hail a taxi out in the street in the cold, heat, rain, wind.

The cars are always clean, comfortable, no partitions, and there is an incentive for the driver to go the shortest route.

If by "taxi" you mean what we call car service, (call on the phone and the car comes to you) there are not many of them left. Uber kind of put them out of business. There are a few left, but I like the Uber app where it is paid for without me doing anything. I can cash tip or credit card tip in the app.

I know exactly when the car will pick me up, because the app shows where the car is when it's on the way. During the trip, I can also watch the map and know how far away I am from drop off.

I've been using Uber for a few years, especially after my husband passed. I mostly use it to get to doctor appointments. I've had nothing but good experiences. Uber drivers are not allowed to take cash for the rides although they accept tips in cash. Ergo the need to enter your credit (or debit number, which I don't advise doing). These days many people don't carry cash anyway. Since you feel uncomfortable entering a credit card number, as @Disgustedman suggested it's a good idea to use a prepaid card, as long as it has an expiration date and CVV number, which are required when entering payment information. But I use my regular credit cards. For now, I get 5% cash back for Lyfts until 2024 with one of my Chase cards and I"ll be changing my payment for Uber the next time another reward card gives 5% for the quarter rather than the 3% BOA is giving. I've used various cards over the years, all without issue.

When I've disputed charges, I've gotten a quick resolution, including my first Uber ride to NYC. I was charged $75 (normally about $60) because the driver kept driving around Port Authority...didn't know where to let me off due to the congestion. Uber removed the charge, which means my first ride was free.

You said "So far, I have learned that the free app cannot be downloaded unless one intends to register for an account." How can that be true? How would the Play Store (Android) or whatever app iPhones uses know whether or not you actually plan to use the app? They only provide you with a way to download any app that they deem safe.

@JaniceM The resons I prefer Uber/Lyfts:
~Safety features are in place. You always know who's picking you up. The app shows a picture of the driver, make and model of his/her car and their license plate number. There is an emergency feature in case you feel the ride is going wrong. There is also a share details of this ride feature, so you can keep loved ones posted about the ride.

~It's convenient and relatively quick. You can see in real time how long it will take the driver to pick you up and reach your destination. There are also options for a less expensive ride if you are willing to wait til several minutes later. I've used that option twice with Lyft and each time, the driver came in the same amount of time the more expensive option mentioned. When I used to use cab service, they didn't come that quickly and one never came at all. The last time I rode in a cab with a couple of family members that required more than one stop and unloading luggage, the driver was very rude. Uber/Lyft...no problem.

~I never have to worry about not having enough money to pay for my ride. If I decide to tip, I can choose to use cash or tip via the app, which is what I've started doing.

~When hailing a cab, you never know who you are riding with and there's no accountability. I watched a Criminal Minds episode about a cab driver who was abducting and killing women. That scared the bazoobas out of me and made me seriously reconsider just jumping into a cab. I also stopped watching CM for awhile after that. 😨

You can contact the Taxi Cab Company and speak with a human being.
Taxi drivers are licensed.
From what I was told a few years ago,Taxi Cab Companies and their drivers are under rules and regulations.

There just seem to be too many possible problems and questions regarding Uber.

I do not spend all of my time with electronics, technology and apps.
The free app did want some payment information to be used for my service.
I just wanted to check out Uber and download the app.
At that time I was not planning to request service.

Who or what was this free app affiliated with? Where did you find it? I'm confused...are you are talking about the Uber app itself or the platform from which you could download the Uber app?

That was one concern I've had- are Uber, Lyft, etc. drivers checked out (vetted, licensed, etc.)?

Does the Uber Driver have a valid updated driver's license?
Do the same state and federal laws and rules that Taxi Cab Companies have to follow apply to Uber and Lyft?

If an Uber car gets into an accident does the Uber Company send in a replacement driver to take that person to his/her destination?
What happens to the person if the Uber driver's car breaks down?

Uber and Lyft operate through technology.
Should anything happen there is not a local branch office to call.
There is no human being.
With Uber it is about doing everything through a mobile device.
Things happen to mobile devices.
Technology does not always work well.
What happens if the technology does not recognize your new debit card number?
What happens if the technology does not acknowledge your new email address?
