An active duty US Airman on Sunday died after he lit himself on fire in front of the Israeli embassy in Washington, DC, in an act of protest against the war in Gaza.

Aaron Bushnell said in a live-streamed video on Twitch that his decision was to "protest against the genocide of the Palestinian people," according to a censored clip of the stream that was posted on X by independent journalist Talia Jane.

In the clip, Bushnell introduces himself as "an active duty member of the US Air Force," saying: "I will no longer be complicit in genocide."
The US isn't taking part in the fighting in Israel's invasion of Gaza, but is a strong ally to Israel and recently vetoed a United Nations motion calling for a cease-fire.
In the video, security and police were seen responding to Bushnell as he was engulfed in flames and screamed "Free Palestine."
While some responding officers attempted to put the fire out with extinguishers, others could be seen in the video standing nearby with guns drawn and calling for the man to get on the ground.
The US Air Force confirmed that the man was a genuine serviceman, per the military news site Task and Purpose. It did not confirm his name, though.
Bushnell died late Sunday, per reporting by Jane. Early on Monday, NBC News also reported the death, citing a US official.
NBC said that a formal notification would be made later, citing the need to formally notify Bushnell's family first.
The Department of Defense referred Business Insider to the Air Force when reached with a request for comment. The Air Force did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

I shared the news about the tragic self-immolation of U.S. airman Aaron Bushnell because I believe it's crucial for us to acknowledge the far-reachin' effects of the geopolitical conflicts like the Gaza War. I don't expect much discussion, but it's a stark reminder of the human cost of such conflicts. Reflection on the importance of finding peaceful solutions. :(

This isn't Vietnam and he's not a Buddhist monk. He's an f'ed up mental case. To be brainwashed to this extent shows how Evil and Servile the Hamas propaganda machine is. And this kid bought into it. This kid turned himself into a Roman Candle to protect Hamas? Good riddance. Time will tell this lost kid's story.

Like Kate, I'm sick of your bombardment Paco. A few months ago you promised yourself and others, but most importantly yourself, that you'd stop this one man crusade......

My stomach churns when I see a new thread by you on this topic. This new story is pathetic.

I hope he doesn't have a family, who will spend the rest of their lives mourning this suicide.

The bankers will ensure we all remain in debt. The pharmaceutical industry will ensure we all remain sick. The weapons manufacturers will ensure we continue going to war while the media ensures we never learn the truth and the government ensures all of the above is done lawfully.

Anyone using that picture as propaganda should be horribly ashamed. Is it even a real picture? I don't even know anymore. If there *is* a real picture, I hope the jerk who stood there snapping it instead of trying to save this man's life is charged.

Sadly it's real and I think he poured an accelerant over himself which would've made it difficult for bystanders without protective gear to have helped him.

I left this whole war thing go for months. Why I started was to alert the SF of the growing world protests. I that time it has grown into an ICJ case of possible genocide. From there, after demolishing most of Palestine, there is the destruction of Rafha that is critical in so many more civilian deaths and suffering.

The US is complicit in aiding Israel. That too is a concern for many as shown by the demonstrations. Is there a way out? The western world of colonialism isn't working out to well.

But nobody here can do anything about this.
Dont you have any good news to share?
Why bring this horrific news to us charming old people? OMG! 😱
We have become a global community. Along with the joys of life we share the suffering also. Neither is going to go away. I share good and happy stuff all the time. This is very important to me now. Just skip the thread if your not. I will continue to monitor the progress in this war. As I do with other trends that are effecting our planet.

There are plenty of different threads to click on.

But there’s nothing we can do except feel bad. Yes I shall move along. It’s hard to miss a heading like that but I should know better than to look.

Your stats show that you have started eight posts in 2024 alone about this war and against Israel even though you have said it's not that.... uh huh. SMH Eight posts in 2024.... and it's still February! I'd check for the number since 07 Oct '23 but that would tend to disturb me and then I'd have to sit on my hands and that's not a good feeling. So... yeah, you have freedom of speech like the rest of us, but don't get all offended and tattle when someone says something that doesn't suit your sensibilities.

You asked what can be done. It's reported that some of the "protesters" are joining Hamas. I hear they're recruiting via social media and inside Lebanon. No worries about getting sent to the front lines, though... that's where they have been reported to send the children.

Just quit the personal attacks is all I ask. You might not like it, but that is no reason to be hateful, and mean to me.

IMO that's just taking things too far. He may have been of more benefit to the cause had he stayed alive and made his voice heard...as many times as it took. Ironically, the people of Gaza, who I'm sure are mostly Muslims know that suicide is a major sin in Islam. So for those who do not know or choose not to know, Jihadists suicide bombers are going against Islamic teachings.

Show me a personal attack. This is getting pathetic. Stating how many posts you made about this war isn't a personal attack. You're starting to worry me in all seriousness. I haven't seen behavior like this since I became a member here. Everyone who has a different opinion than yours is not "attacking" you personally, Paco. There's a saying about the heat and the kitchen. You start these posts that you know will cause the responses and then get offended when there's a differing opinion or even someone stating a fact that's in the records or in the media. (Hamas' recruitment.... look it up.) Your post starts about Israel/Hamas/war is visible for all to see.

But my real question is this... why do you do this? It's not kind. It's not appropriate. If it's just to upset people, I feel foolish for always stepping in the doo-doo. But this constantly thinking you're being "attacked"... that's kind of creepy. I have seen no attacks from anyone on SF *against* anyone. Healthy debate is not attacking. I don't know what else to say about this... it's a little unnerving to watch sometimes.

I do not like war. If that bothers you leave me alone with my viewpoint, or say you want the war. What do I have to do with this? Either you want it to continue or you don't. I don't. If you do say so. Leave me out of it. I will continue to try to see a way to bring peace to that region. So put me ignore, or skip my threads. No need to worry about me, I know what I am doing. You think you might know me, but you do not. Quit trying to put me in a box. Walk away. Or tell us all why you support the destruction of Palestine.
