The longtime leader of a Southern California synagogue who was wounded in a deadly attack at the house of worship he founded pleaded guilty Tuesday to participating in a multimillion-dollar fraud that disguised charitable contributions for personal gain.

Rabbi Yisroel Goldstein faces a maximum sentence of five years in prison for fraud but prosecutors will recommend probation as part of a plea agreement. They noted his cooperation with investigators after federal agents raided his home and office in October 2018 and his widely praised response to the attack on the Chabad of Poway synagogue in April 2019.

Rabbi Ysiroel Goldstein, 58, the former director and founder of the Chabad of Poway, admitted to secretly refunding millions in contributions to the synagogue and providing donors with fake receipts, federal prosecutors in San Diego said in a statement.

Five of Goldstein’s associates pleaded guilty to wire fraud, money laundering, filing a false tax return and other crimes.

(This might be the only way the rest of the frauders will come forth, hmmmm)....he's getting only five years or less, huh?

five years at club med no doubt. repulsive, wrong,
Plea deals suck,
The justice dept agents, all law enforcement agencies will 'cut a deal' to get a -conviction'.
I think any 12 citizens setting on a charity fraud trial would send these people where they belong, why the plea bargain?

The more the religion, the more the evil. Doesn't matter what religion.

I'm not a particularly religious person. I used to make it to church hypocritically) on Christmas and Easter but even that has fallen by the wayside.

However, why do we (some of us) become so outraged at the failings of religious leaders and at the same time fawn over political leaders who also steal the country blind along with a committing a slew of other terrible acts.

Wasn't a political operative, recently convicted by a jury, pardoned and released for no apparent reason? I could pick another situation but his fiasco is recent. He didn't even have to go through the "Cub Med" treatment that someone mentioned. Same deal as the religious leader or actually better it would seem.

All high level criminal don't necessarily wear the clergymen's collars.

He owned five (five!) apartments in the Dakota on Central Park West. Some imagination!
If you know anything about income tax, he had to invest much of his money - or give a lot of it to the government, like any wealthy person.
Rental properties are tax shelters.

Ok, there is nothing ironic about a guy with $800 million writing a song about how we should all abandon all our possessions.

It's still the worst song ever written.
