How they are made:

Well at least for those that enjoy them. Many people dislike this ancient candy, especially people that are strongly chocolate candy only types. They can just leave jokes here, haha. I enjoy all the flavors. Numbers following colors are my 5 to 1 like scale with 3 neutral. So don't dislike any because all are mildly sugar sweet. I do like how a roll tends to take time to consume one at a time, and there is variety. Can you guess what flavors you are eating without looking? A good snack choice to help stay awake while driving long distances. They are $1.25 at a local Dollar Tree that is less expensive than anything on Amazon.

Necco Wafers come in a variety of flavors (8), each made from a combination of sugar, corn syrup, and other ingredients. Here are the eight classic flavors and their primary ingredients:

Chocolate - brown 5
__Cocoa powder
Cinnamon - white 3
__Cinnamon oil
Licorice - black 3
__Anise oil
Clove - purple 4
__Clove oil
Wintergreen - pink 3
__Wintergreen oil
Orange - orange 4
__ Orange oil
Lemon - yellow 4
__Lemon oil
Lime -green 3
__Lime flavoring

Growing up, this was always my movie choice while my brothers got popcorn and Milk Duds. Not only were they sweet little discs covered in powdered sugar, (not chalk!) that melt on the tongue, it was possible to line them up on the back of the movie seat in front of you and play with them before eating, so maybe the chalk, er, powdered sugar was some sort of lice insecticide.

It's been 60 years since I've had any. I'd be happy to rate the flavors if David wanted to send me some.

I cannot rate the flavors of Necco Wafers. I love them all. They are my favorite candies. If I had a box of a dozen rolls, they'd be gone in a week -- if I use self control. I discovered them the day I moved to Boston in 1989.

Spangler Candy Company makes them now. Sometimes I find them for sale at reasonable prices and I buy lots of rolls. They are the oldest American candy brand still in production.
