Ray Rice of the Baltimore Ravens was given a two game suspension by the NFL earlier this summer for knocking out his wife (fiance at the time) in an elevator. Today, the Ravens in a move that will make them look like they are doing the politically correct thing, released the running back. Will he be picked up by another NFL team? Just like Michael Vick, this man will come with a lot of baggage. TMZ reports that Vick is still the most hated man in the NFL.

So, did they release him because he was unpopular with the fans, or because he's a brutal wife beating bastard?
Either way it's a good outcome but I would hope that it was the latter.

Why are there so many thugs in football compared to other sports? Probably the violent nature of the game is a good fit with thug personalities...

One possibility is that they are talent spotted as little more than boys and from then on they focus only on their sport. This leaves very little time for growing into manhood. They grow, and boy how they grow, but their growth as men is stunted.

Spoilt brats in testosterone fuelled bodies with an overinflated sense of entitlement is not a desirable combination.

I believe we see the "thug" mentality in the NFL, NBA, and... to some extent... in MLB. The NFL and NBA have seen the worst displays of that culture. And, we are seeing a mushrooming of similar mentality in the college ranks of football and basketball.

These kids are raised as idols. They are passed through school without being able to read, write, or speak intelligently. Why? Because they are meal tickets for multi-million dollar athletic programs. Successful high school coaches are paid six figures, while their scholatic teacher counterparts are struggling to get by. Successful athletic programs in colleges will see dozens of high salaried support staff dependant upon the ability of kids to perform on the field.

The egos are stroked and enhanced as these kids pass through school. Then, they are handed multi-million dollar contracts as they turn professional. No business experience or tutoring. Never have had consequences meted for bad behavior. Surround themselves with those no smarter then they. See "trophy" wives or girlfriends look past physical abuse simply to have access to the checkbook.

Until the public decides the practice of putting athletes on pedestals... As long as business are making millions promoting fantasy leagues, etc. we will continue to see professional sports populated with criminals that would be locked up if they were "typical" members of a civilized society.

This sums it up best. The game and their image/fame take priority over maturing and evolving into a law abiding decent human being.

Side issue in the NFL. NFL wants to start testing for growth hormone/make it a banned substance and yet there resistance to this. I always felt the NFL players have gotten away with drug abuse on a massive industrial scale. I've spent decades in gyms and done physical jobs over the years and see what a normal non drug fueled athlete and employee look like. I just have a hard time buying what I see from a lot of professional athletes as natural & from training but particularly the NFL. This does not excuse his behavior. As a matter of fact if he was taking drugs and saw the results and effects that should make him more aware and/or quite frankly make him feel "invincible" when confronted with an angry women. So why the punching.

He should also be brought up on assault charges. A month after being knocked out, she married him....the next time she could end up dead. At an earlier press conference, she apologized for her part in being hit in the face by someone trained in attacking other football players. They have a 3 year old daughter.

To play devils advocate here is it really fair to release or indefinately supsend Rice AFTER a lower offical policy of a six game suspension was put in place by the NFL? I understand there is a probably a morals clause that allows a team or league to release or fire a player but with a different policy in place is it fair to penalize him even more. Even if flawed the criminal justice system already dealt with Rice.

Also note that the NFL and/or commissioner Rodger Godell is denying he saw the tape. On purpose for plausible deniability? Other sources say other wise.

No fear, the herd of blind loyal fans will still payt 9 dollars for a beer and 40 dollars for a shirt worth about 10.

They get too roided up!? ...

And on the situation in general ... it's a terrible story, yes, but can the media get past the 24/7 coverage of Ray Rice? They have repeated everything on the topic inside out and backwards non-stop for two days now ..... my head hurts!!.. :upset:
And with the game in Baltimore tonight ... more analysis on the topic..

Violence is entertainment for the masses. The Romans perfected it and not much has changed since...

I'm still in shock that they let Michael Vick come back. IMHO you don't rehabilitate from the appalling cruelty he perpetrated. I think it's a line that once crossed, you don't go back from that kind of depravity.

What I think of Michael Vick cannot be stated here -- they'd probably permanently ban me from the forum. Ditto for the idiots that let him back into the NFL. Who was it that said you can tell a lot about a society (and I think it also applies to telling a lot about a man) from the way it treats its animals?

Although not surprising but stunning I'm surprised the way the actual NFL fan base accepted him. But that's all that matters because that's where the money is for the NFL. I remember seeing interviews when he first came back and there were fans that had brought his jersey before he had played a game. The NFL and other sports leagues have been covering up this crap for years. I think the ex manager of the Atlanta Braves baseball team got caught hitting wife as did some other players.

I guess it comes down to what do you do with an ex con. Do want to try and rehab them or should they pay the rest of their life. Is their "time" enough to pay for their crimes. I guess if the government says they paid their price via a prison sentence forgive or just accepting them is up to the individual business that would hire an ex con.

I haven't really followed this story, but if what you're saying is true, it is appalling that she is willing to bring up a child in that environment. Does she want her daughter to get used to this and marry someone 'just like dear old dad'? Are beatings in her daughters future? Mom has obviously made a choice, but poor little girl.

The truth? They released him because the video was made public and went viral. If it hadn't? He'd still be playing. Now the NFL is out and out lying about not seing the video in April. Ray Rice himself sent it to them. BUT... well.. "they must protect the shield"..

You actually believe other sports dont have thugs?

You just dont see or hear about the other sports simply cause they do a lot better of covering it all up.
