"Reading Dogs"

I stopped by my local library today to check out some books and saw a notice that children can now check out a "reading dog" to read their books to. Sure enough, there was a sweet old golden attentively sitting with her chin on a little boy's knee as he read to her. She was looking up at him as if he were the greatest orator in history and he was thoroughly enjoying working out his words. What a win-win situation.

They've also found out that dogs help with children's stuttering. For some reason, the child has an easier time talking to the dog without stuttering. There's no stress talking to a dog....he isn't going to try to finish your word for you, he doesn't get impatient, and he really doesn't give a damn whether you stutter or not. He's just happy to be in the presence of a god-like being who's paying attention to him.

Fantastic....I can just see it in my minds eye... What a wonderful incentive for the kids to want to read..

I remember my daughter reading to her dolls when she was small, she'd line them up along the wall on her bed and read to them ..to this day she's an avid reader

Our library has done reading to the dogs for several years. I've often thought of volunteering with Callie. He would love nothing better than a soft carpet to lay on and a child reading beside him. If the parents didn't spook at his appearance the kids would love him.

We do the reading dogs here, too Great idea, I think. My Bonnie would want to be kissing the child as he/she read, though. We came home from the vet today and some of her children friends came over to say hi to her. She had a kissing frenzy!
