Reduce Eye Strain

Simple exercises to reduce eye strain.

one simple thing I learned, and it works very well....

When we look as close as possible, that is when our eye muscles are contracting the most.

When we look at the horizon or the sky...something very far away, that is when our eye muscles are relaxed the most.

so, simply looking out the window at the sky or something very far away, is very relaxing to the eyes and just tension in general.

I am not sure how far away an object has to be. I would assume, at least a football field away??

The article mentions the "Bates Palming Exercise"

I have done this one. It really works incredibly well. You do have to, well, "get it right." - you have to place your palm in there just right...not too much pressure, but enough that it really shuts out the light.

Total relaxation. If you do it right, your vision can be a little fuzzy for about 30 seconds after.

I think this thing is actually from Hatha Yoga and is ancient...

Very timely. I actually had eye strain the other day. When I get involved in something on my computer, time disappears, and I can spend eight or more hours on my mission. The other day it was even more hours than that, and I thought what a dummy I am, and installed a timer to remind me to get up and walk around, to take a break during which I am upright, and to look out the window.

I haven't used it yet ... it interferes with my "work". :)

Might also want to look into "dry eye." I have that. I got artificial tears from my eye doctor. Helps tons. just a lubricant...I don't think there is any medication in there.

Also, you know, re allergies. Last year, the wildfires out west were so bad, that the smoke particles traveled all across the country. I had eye problems, my wife's mom had eye problems....lots of folks on the East Coast, all of a sudden had allergy problems and eye problems...

I know that there is currently a big fire out west...if you are out that way, could be that the particulate levels in the ambient air are rising and causing some issues...

And, again, you are right. One of the single best things for eye strain, is simply taking some regular breaks and looking out the window...as simple as that.
