Refilling Your Gas Tank

Since its winter and the weather is unpredictable, I try filling it up on warmer days. I hate putting gas in the car when it's freezing out. I don't go out of my way to save a few cents on gas. I usually pick a place that's the cheapest on the route I'm on. I try not to let it go under a half tank, especially in the winter.
Yes! After filling up my tank in –20 F temperatures only once or twice, I definitely check the forecast.

I always fill mine when it hits 1/4 tank regardless of the weather, but in the winter, if I see a particularly brutal stretch of temperatures in the forecast I fill it before then no matter what level it's at.

We don't let the pick go below 1/2 tank. The Explorer gets filled between 1/4 & 1/2. If we are in either vehicle doing errands & see good prices, I'll top it off. Today I passed a Speedway that had gas for $2.12 & with the Speedy card, you get an additional 7-cents off, so that would make it $2.05/gallon.

I fill up about every 300 to 350 km. The fuel gauge is usually showing about 3/4 full or just below. As others have stated I don't want to get condensation in my tank and probably the biggest reason is because my Dad always hammered it into us that it doesn't cost any more to keep the top half full than it does the bottom half.

I get gas as seldom as possible, so I get it at about 1/4 tank. Seldom, because my gas door is so hard to open and close, and actually scrapes. I've tried adjusting it, and have it in a 'workable' state now, and don't mess with it anymore. It's a common problem with my make and model. In the old days a mechanic would fix it for free, or for $5, but those days are gone. :cautious:

Remember the days when you'd have to go into the station, hand the cashier a 20 and say "$20 of regular on pump 6"?

So, you'd trudge back out, start the gas flowing and when the pump got to $19.85, it slowed down. $19.86666666...$19.8777777...$19.88888..

A manager who was a friend told me they were deliberately set that way to get you (standing out there freezing your **** off) to just say "The hell with it!" and quit pumping.

The pump would reset for the next person and the gas station got an extra few cents. It mounts up.

Also, if you asked for $20, and your tank only needed $19.25 worth, you had to go back in for the change.

I'll take today's stations.

I rarely allow our vehicles to much below a half tank. With a storm like we have now it just makes sense to have a full tank. We probably won't get either of our vehicles out till the roads are very clear. It amazes me that some people will bring every gas can they have as if there will never be any available in their lifetime. Of course, in Tennessee they do the same thing concerning milk, bread, and toilet paper.

After RV'ing around the country for 8 years I got into the habit of refilling when it got to half full. Both so I wouldn't run out and it was a good excuse to stop and take a break. It became a habit I still do with all our vehicles.
