Registering for the Draft (US)

What I found when I Googled the draft laws...key points.

Almost all male U.S. citizens and male immigrants between the ages of 18 and 25 are required to register with the Selective Service System.

Eligibility and Requirements

  • Age: Men must register between 18 and 25 years old. Registration is required within 30 days of turning 18, and men can still register up to age 26 if they missed the initial window Selective Service SystemSelective Service System+1.
  • Citizenship: This includes U.S. born citizens, naturalized citizens, and dual nationals. Dual nationals must register even if they live outside the U.S. Selective Service SystemSelective Service System+1.
  • Special Circumstances: Men who are hospitalized, incarcerated, disabled, or in the Armed Forces are generally still required to register, though some may be exempt from service if a draft occurs Selective Service SystemSelective Service System+1.
  • Conscientious objectors can register but may claim exemption from military service if a draft occurs Selective Service SystemSelective Service System.

Automatic Registration Update

Starting December 18, 2026, most men ages 18-25 will be automatically registered using federal databases, including Social Security records. Men will be notified of their registration and can provide updated contact information or request removal if incorrectly registered usmilitary.org.

Consequences of Not Registering

Failure to register is a federal felony, which can result in fines or imprisonment. It may also affect eligibility for federal jobs, student financial aid, and U.S. citizenship for immigrants USAGovUSAGov+1.

Important Notes

  • Registration does not mean automatic induction into the military. In the event of a draft, men would be called based on a lottery system and evaluated for fitness before service Selective Service SystemSelective Service System+1.

Evaluated for fitness. You can always quickly gain 60 kilo then.
Fines, imprisonment. I was always so grateful for the men who freed us with WWII, but apparently they were forced to.

It used to be a felony here too. That's why my brother lied that he was crazy.

So evil and unfair. Oh you sported and are normal? You must fight. And especially: You're a young man. Where are these feminists now? Only fighting for their own rights aren't they? Evil.

And in Israel the girls must fight too, but the orthodox guys don't cause they have to study the Torah. What the... I knew a creep. His son went to Israel. The son is Jewish. He studies the Torah and doesn't fight. Great but a girl is forced to defend him. No way.

I had the same misconception KSav. I wonder if that was true once, then was changed.
That was interesting information you posted after this post (i.e., the one I quoted), @OneEyedDiva; thank you for that. I know very little about this topic.

I did a quick search of my own and found this AI response with respect to the "only son" thing:

No, being an only son has never alone been grounds for a draft exemption in the United States. While a popular urban legend suggests that an only son—or the "last to carry the family name"—is exempt, no such law has ever existed. [1, 2]
Confusion often stems from the Sole Survivor Policy, which protects family members from the draft or combat only if a parent or sibling was killed in action or died from service-related causes. [1]
