Remember…magazines? Read or subscribe to any?

My "go-to" birthday gift for someone of.....uh.....advanced years is a magazine that came out the month of that person's birth. It's really fun to go back and read the articles, see what were "hot issues" and laugh at the ads back then.

They used to be easy to find in antique shops but now I have to order them on the internet.

Speaking of ads, I have an old Ladies' Home Journal that I bought for my late mother that has an ad that says, "Don't Ask for Toilet Paper.....Ask for Scott Tissue. It's the Proper Thing to Do!" Because, y'know, we cahn't talk about toilet paper in public.....

I subscribed when I was young but not anymore. I do still buy an occasional single issue mag in the checkout of the grocery store if there's something in there that interests me. So I am glad magazines still exist. :giggle:

I also frequented bookstores where I would buy a bunch of them. I remember a guy scoffing at me about how much money I wasted on them. But I still have that magazine, and I haven't seen him in years.
That last sentence is hilarious 🤣

The only magazine I buy is if I’m at B&N and I can get ahold of a copy of The English Home…. *sigh*. All just daydreams but beautiful 😊

Magazines were important in my family when I was growing up. For years, we subscribed to Reader’s Digest and National Geographic.

I subscribed to many of the women’s magazines but have gradually let them go.

This year I did not renew my subscription to The Sun (an ad free literary magazine) . I always loved it but as I’ve aged it all just seemed less interesting to me. Also feel the quality of the writing has declined.

Used to get Astronomy and Sky and Telescope every month for years. I was a huge astronomy nut. I got into photography and the night sky big time. Loved every minute of it. After retirement I switched from astronomy to photography, (wildlife photography). I still have a cabinet full of the old magazines and books on the subject. Now I pack light and hunt birdies to photograph. Don't know if it is allowed here but here is a link to birds I photographed in several different countries.. www.flickr.com/photos/avianphotos

I always make sure I have a magazine or book in my bag when I go out for a Coffee or shopping. Couldn't stand looking at my phone like everybody else does. Woolworths and Coles supermarkets every month brings out a new magazine with handy recipes and good ideas for the garden, and it's free.
I love looking at those too.

I. Have not had a magazine subscription for many years, and then it was probably Prevention or Reader’s Digest. Back when I had horses, I had Western Horseman, Arabian Horse World, and several other horse-oriented magazines, although some I just bought and did not have a subscription to. For many years, I had Mother Earth News subscription, and loved reading that when it came out …… so muc good information for a rural lifestyle.
Now, I would probably read one online before I would get a paper subscription.

I remember being disappointed when doctors offices stopped fanning out piles of popular magazines on all the tables in the waiting room. That was kind of a gradual process.

First, the piles got smaller, then they were even smaller piles of boring health magazines, and then all they had were 2 or 3-page brochures about cancer and diabetes and maybe hygiene. Now the waiting rooms don't even have tables.

But a lot of them have a TV stuck on a wall. And the TVs used to run regular programs. Now a lot of them just run programs on health; healthy eating, healthy exercise, healthy skin care.... and the wait time feels like an eternity.
