Venture capitists are buying old bowling alleys, and completely remodeling them to include all kinds of new attractions. I bet it is gonna cost u more than 5 bucks to play a couple games in these new entertainment centers.

Changing Lanes

America’s most popular declining sport

Good article a bit long but this kind of money making scheme is happening everywhere...we just don't have this kind of money laying around.

We used to go "duck pin" bowling when I lived in Virginia. Balls are smaller, lighter and don't have finger holes. You hold them in your hand and rest them against the inside of your wrist. The pins are also smaller and lighter. You get to roll the ball three times instead of only two.

I think in Canada, they're called Candlepins.

I always thought that if I came into some money, I'd open a duckpin alley attraction here in the Orlando area. It would be something new and it could be marketed as something a little more "refined" that traditional bowling. Instead of Bud and pizza, I'd offer tapas/small plates and craft beer/designer wines. I think I could get the Yuppies (if they still exist) in in droves.

I love to bowl but haven't attempted it in decades. I say attempt because I was pretty bad at it. Being ambidextrous, I never could figure out which hand was best to use. Now I "bowl" on my tablet and am much better at it using the app. Plus I get applause when I get a strike or spare. :D I'm always impressed by luxury mansions that have full entertainment spaces like movie theaters with popcorn and bowling alleys.

PD, that second one reminds me of a noisy sports bar. Sheesh!... give me a traditional English or Scottish pub instead.

Why can't they just leave crap alone? Maybe since people don't bowl much anymore they're trying to revive a dying sport. But raising prices to cover the costs of enhancements won't help.

i had to use the 6 pound ball and i wasn't great but i enjoyed it. i don't do crap now because of my health and after covid and all. i can't afford to do anything these days.

I always loved bowling (Especially leagues), and I would still go if there was one close to me. It's a fun sport, and teams are an enjoyable social bonding experience.
It's a game of concentration and calculation. I would find all the added elements in the photos distracting.

Actually I was thinking more on the lines of a Tuscan goat cheese and fig comfit pizzetta, or braised Andean goat ribs on a bed of squid-ink rice hand-foraged in the Amazon jungle. Of course, all the drinks will be "bespoke". Instead of appetizers, we'll have little "amuse boche". The kiddy menu will include "Pureed nut spread with a grape relish reduction paired with a semi-artisanal bread" and "Petite oil-seared hand-deconstructed pomme de terres with a lightly-sweetened tomato puree". <Snort>

I love bowling. When I was young I used to belong to a league. Still bowl occasionally, it’s fun!

Oh! Oh! Who remembers before the automated bowling alleys, where there were people behind the pins who’d reset them, clear out the downed ones before the second roll etc????
i can't imagine that. i bowled on a team once. it was ok but man that was a long 9 months.

I think it's awesome they're refurbishing these old bowling alleys. There's a couple here in Sac that are just sitting there going to ruin.

My dad was a member of a Sacramento bowling team. They all had matching shirts and special gloves, and there was a lot of ball comparison and ball-envy going on...just having the best ball-bag was a big deal. 😜
Bowlers were a very competitive bunch back in the 60s.

Used to love to bowl. I bowled on leagues off and on. Since the stroke I've been a few times, just afterwards as it gave me something to do/feel good about, though at the time my right side vision was not working. Which was kind of okay because I bowl right handed. I currently don't have anyone in my life who likes to bowl, I could go solo like I was.

I don't like the modern lanes, now they use plastic instead of wood, and they use way too much oil! I roll the ball, and it skids halfway while oil flies off both sides of the ball. 😧 then when the ball grabs, it veers away from where I put it.

I used to bowl around 200 on wood (high was 239). On Oil (...er, I mean plastic, lol) 130 was all I could muster. I guess that's why I lost interest.

I tried with a 6 pound Ball..but the problem was the finger holes were so tiny that my hand would get stuck when I threw the ball and I was in danger of following it.:ROFLMAO:

Had an old 16 pounder I used in my 20s. Used to be good with it. Then in my 40s I started bowling for a league in my workplace, had to switch to a 12 pound ball. I tried the old 16, my fingers had gotten bigger and when I released the ball it made an audible "pop" when the ball left my fingers. Didn't feel too good after a few times. I still have my 12, sold the 16 in a yard sale.

Holly, I can identify w/ the feeling of "following the ball" from that! Lol

I like bowling, but I'm not good at it. Seems like all my relatives on my father's side bowl. My grandma took me with her when she went bowling. I was interested in the vending machines. She was a good bowler - bowled 300 a goodly amount of times.

My hands are small (6" from tip of middle finger to wrist -- I use my hands to measure things), so I had to find a ball that didn't weigh too much. Eventually, I realized that my aim is poor with all balls I throw (like baseball, basketball, bowling ball). Never could correct that.

Mass had candlepin bowling. My husband got so aggravated when he found out, and refused to go bowling. I like bowling even though my high score is probably 67.

It's always fun when somebody bowls a 300! Big celebration.
One guy on my last team bowled one, missed the chance before, he ended up with a 276. Made it more fun when he got the 300.
