Remember when we were talking about why red cars cost more?

Hubby says they bought a QUART of red automotive paint today-$164.00. He showed the customer the invoice-he was shocked! All other colors were $99.00.

The best reason for not buying it despite the high cost, is due to the fact that it FADES faster than any other car color. I've always noticed that. Unless it's garaged or kept waxed it's gonna turn pink in a short time;
unlike other colors.

Hubby says not nowadays. Everything has a clear coat on it and it`s good stuff now-keeps any paint from fading.

My 2001 Corvette. Paint is still in full bloom. Of course, I wax it about every two weeks,

Hmmm, now that makes me wonder if red cars cost more to insure, given the added expense the insurance company would incur to repair (paint) your vehicle.

The car is listed as a 'weekender' or something like that. Actually, the insurance is less than our 2012 Impala or our 2012 Chevrolet Express. I have had it two years this month and I know we have not yet put 1000 miles on it. We just cruise around town in it on warm Saturday evenings, now and then.

I know my son in law`s costs less to insure than their other cars-even with teenage drivers! My daughter`s Honda costs the most.

I had a daily driver Vette and it was far from cheap.

... and it was black. :D

I notice quite a few cars for sale where the clearcoat has cracked (lack of maintenance?) - they look like they have skin cancer, no matter what the undercoat color is.

Unfortunately, there was a clearcoat product out there for years that was an inferior product. Our painter, who painted for us for 34 years, refused to use it,in spite of the fact that it cost half what our usual product cost.We found out that after a few years,it started peeling. Our paint distributor had a nightmare on their hands, paying for the labor cost and new product to repaint all the cars that came back to body shops with "lifetime" guarantees-something all shops have to offer if they want to be included as a "Direct Repair Facility"....

Makes sense.

The wife had a 1984 Laser (Chrysler? Dodge?), red, that developed a bad case of eczema after 2 years.

No great loss, seeing as how the car itself was a lemon, but still ...

I remember repainting lots of 80s cars under factory warranties because that was before the clear coats that are used today came along. I had an 85 Chevy Suburban (dark blue) that lost all the paint on the tailgate-it peeled off in huge strips. Most every Chevy truck or Suburban you saw on the street in that color had the same problem. Lucky for me,my hubby owned a body shop :) That was my kids mantra,by the way......"No problem! My daddy owns a body shop!" At least that`s what hubby used to say about them and their driving habits lol.

I owned quite a few '80's vehicles, and now that you mention it the majority of them exhibited clear-coat peeling, even the '88 Vette.

I had a Chevy Astro - forgot what year but it was in the '80's - the peel was so bad it looked like camouflage paint.

Not being a body person and being too cheap to have them re-done I usually just sold them and bought another one.

My Vette Convertible is the same color, oldman....Torch Red, only I have Black Interior. What wax do you use? I use Zaino, which I learned about quite awhile ago on a Corvette Forum. It really gives an exceptional shine, and helps protect the clear coat.
