Greetings to you,

My former stage name was Axel Slingerland. The name came from a nickname given to me when I was 10, Ax Slinger, because I play guitar. As I got older I discovered that there were a million Ax Slingers in America, so I changed it to Axel Slingerland as a joke and it kind of stuck. (Slingerland is a manufacturer of drum kits.) It comes from a guitar being called an Ax by guitarists, and Slinger being the guitarist. I explained that thousands of times, but more often than not people call me Ax.

I grew up in a musical family, picked up playing guitar from my Dad. Some of my favorite memories of his are the two of us playing blues on the front porch of our house. He gave me a mini guitar when I was three and by age four I was playing along with him. Going back as far as I can remember all the way through high school and college, I had a guitar in my had everywhere I went.

Don't let the thread title throw you off, only three of four words describe me. I'm not exactly when I would call a Hippie, but my late wife gave me a t-shirt that said that once and that was all I could think of when I saw the thing about the four word minimum on thread titles. I spent the better part of my adult working life playing in a blues rock band. That is certainly a very nomadic life style, and I think she associated that with hippies for some reason.

In any case on the 16th I will be 69 years old, and I have been looking for a forum to hang out on. I hope this is it!

A Tele, eh? I prefer Strats myself. 1980... I was 24 and had already done over a 1,000 gigs.

I tried to play piano once. My sister screamed at me to get my hands off of her piano. I tied again later and saw why. It takes talent to play piano! :)

I used to be a passable lead player, but mostly rhythm. But I can't play at all anymore. I have bad arthritis and can't even play simple 12 bar blues anymore. Whenever I hear those hours long blues videos on youtube it makes me sad. You can make major money on youtube even with just cell phone camera.

I always thought of myself as a dippie, someone who don't do none of that ippie stuff. :)

Many years ago my band was on one of it's many breaks and I was working in Wahweap Lodge in Page, Arizona and was offered a job for the winter in Bullfrog Marina in Utah. So I was working as a night auditor at The Defiance House Hotel in Bullfrog, which due to winter was totally empty. Or so I thought.

It was New Years Eve, and I was at the Front Desk of the hotel playing Jimi Hendrix's Woodstock version of The Star Spangled Banner, quite loud, and this guy in a National Park Service uniform walks up to the desk. I put my guitar down and asked if I could help him. He said he just wanted to get some sleep, and wanted to know if the concert was over for the night.

Since I went to work at 11:00 pm, and there was usually nobody in the hotel, it would take me all of a half hour to do the audit. Which I didn't do until 3:00 or 4:00 am. If I had done the audit when I first got there, I would have known that the hotel had 15 senior National Park Service Rangers staying there, including the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area Superintendent. They were going to have a meeting the next day. It was the head Ranger that I woke up. :cool:
