Richie Havens

He did a lot more than I knew, like with teaching the kids about ecology and doing all that commercial work. I only ever knew about him from the Woodstock movie.

Go easy, Bro - thanks for the tunes.

I loved Richie Havens...and actually met him for real, when I was living in the town of Woodstock and he was playing at a local club. I went into the green room to ask him to make an announcement about a prison action my friends and I were planning. He hugged me. Such a big guy, and all heart!

I also lived in Woodstock, Marcy. I shared a home on Tinker Street, next to the post office. I also love and adore Richie Havens. He was a great inspiration.

Richie's style of playing affected me as I started my guitar journey in high school.
I bought his albums during this time and still enjoy them.
His commitment to his beliefs also impressed me.

This is one of my favorites:

I was 14 and still living in Europe when he performed "Freedom" at Woodstock. I loved his music and songs.
RIP. He will be dearly missed.

I had a group guitar lesson that he taught when I was around 12 years old. I can remember it fairly clearly. We were gathered around him... he talked about how he used his thumb on his left hand to fret some of the notes. He had huge hands so it was easy for him.

Too bad. Another icon of our youth is gone. :(
