San Francisco Decides FOR Puppies!

I would like to congratulate any San Francisco folks who might be here because your city just voted to ban the sale of puppy mill pups and kittens in your city pet stores! From now on, only dogs and cats from rescue's/shelters will be allowed for sale there! You rock folks whoever you are! I wish more cities would do this. Put some of those awful puppy mills out of business and empty some shelters maybe! Fingers crossed.

In general I approve but what about the need for some genuine specialised breeders of thoroughbreds and working dogs?

Aah, having now read the article I understand that this restriction only applies to pet stores. Good move.

Fantastic move and I don't want to take away from it but....a great many of the "rescue" animals in the pet store are not genuine". Many are dogs picked up on Craigs and claimed to have been picked up at "no kill' shelters, or overseas by bogus rescue associations. They change hands a few times till they end up in the pet shops at high prices. It is certainly a move in the right direction though so well done to SF.

I think it's great too and I'm sorry to admit that once we actually supported a puppy mill because I fell in love with a little Min Pin puppy in a pet store. She was so adorable and we had her for about 15 years as part of our family. Her health was great until the last year or so when her heart developed problems. The one thing that showed her bad breeding as a young dog was that where you see Min Pin's in shows as these gorgeous delicate little dogs, Casey was enormous. She had to weigh at least 18 pounds. Big, strong, miniature dog:D!

But that was before I'd ever heard about puppy mills or the horrors that those dogs live with. Now I would never, ever do that. So I'm really glad to hear about this change.

Well, as least they get rescued -- here, many animals sold as free to good home on Craig's list end up as bait animals for dog fighting rings. I'd like to see them ban Craig's list from offering animals.
