Saturday May 23 is World Turtle Day!!

This Saturday is World Turtle Day.

American Tortoise Rescue, a nonprofit organization established in 1990 for the protection of all species of tortoise and turtle, is sponsoring its 20th annual World Turtle Day® on May 23. The day was created as an annual observance to help people celebrate and protect turtles and tortoises and their disappearing habitats around the world.

Didn't want anyone to let this slip by.

Does anyone remember those little dime-store turtles- around the size of a half-dollar?
I liked those when I was a little kid. But I heard stores were made to stop selling them, claiming they carried some kind of diseases.
My dad managed a GC Murphy store back i the day...kind like a Woolworths.

They sold those turtles, fish, parakeets, finches, chameleons, and dyed chicks & ducks every Easter.

It was crazy, because the minimum wage high school kids didn't know how to do that stuff. There were always birds flying around the store.

Regarding diseases...I got this from a search:
Turtles commonly carry Salmonella bacteria on their outer skin and shell surfaces.

Well. That will ruin your day, won't it?

edit to add: It's now illegal to sell them in the U.S.

I didn't know they were still illegal.
Well, they were fun while they lasted.

I have to say I like those animal programs, where little baby turtles crawl to the ocean, from their sandy nests. They're kind of cute little things. But I hate it when some **** bird swoops down and eats them. I can't take that. I'm getting soft in my old age. I can't watch animal programs where some cute little animals get eaten. I know reality is, well, reality, but I don't have to watch it.

Here's how to create inner conflict:

Go to the World Wildlife Federation and adopt a penguin.
Then adopt a polar bear.

I like Turtles , I had a 'box' Turtle ? that lived in my back yard for a few years....I guess he wondered off ?

No, I never hit him with the mower.... I always searched the yard before mowing.

My dad had a huge one in his yard in Florida ... 24 or more inches , front to back across the shell .. named him Tulley. The new owners of the property promised to take good care of him when dad sold/moved.

I've seen a few of the big ones around here crossing the roads from farm pond to farm pond.
They're kind of a light tan/dry dirt color. Just HUGE!!!
Those I DON'T pick up and help!!!

And I, too, walk my property for turtles (and for snakes) before mowing.
