Schizophrenia linked to marijuana use disorder is on the rise

The proportion of schizophrenia cases linked with problematic use of marijuana has increased over the past 25 years, according to a new study from Denmark.

"There is, unfortunately, evidence to suggest that cannabis is increasingly seen as a somewhat harmless substance. This is unfortunate, since we see links with schizophrenia, poorer cognitive function, substance use disorders, etc," Hjorthøj wrote………………….

I'm passionate about this subject, a close friend's son started smoking pot when he was 12 and developed schizophrenia in his late teens. He is now in his 40s and shares a home with other middle aged disabled people, so sad because he was such a lovely little boy. Not sure if it's a bit like smoking - some lucky people reach old age without problems while others develop lung cancer, it's an enigma we still don't understand.

Where I live, marijuana is legal. It can be bought in special stores.

I'm not into getting high on anything (drugs or alcohol), but I find CBD good as a quick painkiller -- on occasion only, which I take in a liquid or dab on as a cream. Alternatively, I may take one Tylenol a week.

(Well, the pain isn't that bad.)

It sure is a miracle plant, people suffering pain have benefited greatly from it, but if a teen starts smoking cannabis before their brain has fully matured, they can tip over into mental illness. Few people seem to acknowledge that because it’s still considered a harmless drug but when you see the awful results, you know it's not true, it can do real, life long damage. Just my opinion.

Just as nicotine and tar, in cigarettes, can have a bad effect on the lungs, some of these hallucinating drugs quite probably create problems in the brain.
Who would anticipate that a psychotropic chemical might cause the user to start hearing voices? Duh!

Actually, now that I think about it, Aldous Huxley foreshadowed the downside of a drug that could be taken to keep the users free of all physical and emotional pain. He called it Soma. If you haven't already read Brave New World, I recommend it as a very important book.

What’s the Best Advice?

Although the exact nature of the marijuana-schizophrenia link is still murky, doctors know enough to offer some guidelines:

  • It’s wise for teens to avoid marijuana or delay using it until they are adults.
  • If you have schizophrenia, don’t use marijuana.
  • If you have a family history of schizophrenia or other psychotic illness, avoid marijuana.
  • If you are a caregiver for someone who has schizophrenia and uses marijuana, encourage them to quit.

I knew about the effects of smoking cannabis many years ago, in
he 1970s I think, anyway, it convinced me never to go near the stuff!

You original post, melowyellow, has proved that my decision was the
right one.

Mike.
Thanks Mike, glad you made the right decision.

A bit off topic but those parents who have been successful in raising a child to adulthood deserve a medal IMO. I’m thinking of the popular elite group in high school and the geek on the outside looking in, feeling miserable. My experience with my own children is that geek turned out to lead a successful, happy life while some of the ‘cool kids’ did not. But it’s not only drugs, the other evil is porn – God knows how little 12 year old girls watching this crap will ever achieve a healthy adult sex life, wondering if this is what is expected of them.
