School Shooter's Mother Found Guilty of Manslaughter

In an unprecedented case a parent has been found partially responsible for her son killing four students.
Jennifer Crumbly and her husband bought their mentally ill fifteen year old a gun, failed to get him psychiatric help, and refused to take him home on the day of the shooting after the school recommended it.

I think this is great. Now maybe more parents will think twice before buying guns for their children and gun owners will be more diligent about securing their guns.

I just can't get over that "bought their mentally ill fifteen year old a gun"... it boggles. Glad to see this.

she tried telling the jury that it was her husband who dealt with the guns, that she had no interest whatsoever in guns... but the video and screenshots of her buying the gun at the store, having her son clearly showing her how it works.. and then bragging on FB about going shooting with him at the range.....

...then she had the nerve to tell him 'don't get caught'' when the school called and said they were concerned to find him searching for ammunition during school time...

Now the Father will be shaking in his shoes, waiting to see the sentence given to his wife. He's next... wonder what will happen with him. he doesn't have as much against him as the mother, but he did sanction the buying of the gun.. and he did run from the police with his wife, and hid in a hotel with all the money drawn from their accounts, and with 4 Burner phones... ...but I suspect he may get a lesser sentence

But even worse - she and her husband fled the town and tried to leave the country, I guess. They were not like the parents of the Columbine shooters who stayed there and assisted investigators as much as they could.

It's so heartbreaking all around. But I hope the parents of the dead and injured will feel like the justice system has prevailed for their families. It is a super-important precedent for the whole country. I hope this case gets through to gun-owning parents that if you want to have guns, you cannot give your teen access to them in an unsupervised way because teens are going through too much stuff, what with the dominance of social media in their lives.

This is why I am SO AGAINST schools using X, Facebook, etc. to communicate with kids and parents. If you want them to log into a school district site to get HW assignments or message the teacher, then FINE. But do not make belonging to Facebook, X, or any other social media platform a mandatory part of school. Lead the kids AWAY from social media for classwork. They are dying because of what happens on social media. Have closed communication systems supervised by school district employees.

Don't leave it to the billionaires to supervise our children online.

I couldn't agree with this any more. I've tried to boycott Facebook from the beginning because of all the harm it does to children and the lies its owner tells, so I am always shocked at the number of schools and churches that give him their business.

This is a proper verdict. There needs to be justice and accountability.

As far as the shooter, he certainly needs to be locked up for the safety of society, but if he is indeed mentally ill, he should get treatment while incarcerated. I don’t know about life without parole for a 15 yr old, but to be on the safe side, I think at least 25 years and then only release if mental health is confirmed.

I kinda feel for the husband in some ways, because not only has this happened with his son, and his son will never be released from prison, but during his wife's trial he learned of all her marital affairs.. so even if she only gets a short sentence, their marriage is finished...

Researchers have found there may be a genetic predisposition for serial killers, which may account for the hallmarks of most serial killers- bed wetting, animal abuse and arson. Yet, bad parenting is thought to be the primary factor in making a serial killer. She just didn't arm a sick kid, she created him.

When I lived in washington state there was an execution of this man who had abused and murdered, I think two boys. The next day they interviewed his brother. The man looked like he was in a work office setting. First, he looked so much like his executed brother it was startling. Who knows how they were really raised but the man said he and his family had no idea who he was or where he came from regarding his behavior.

The lack of personal responsibility and insight is astounding. No reflection on her actions. She's incredulous.

I think parents should be held responsible for any criminal actions of their children.
There have to be limits to that though don't you think? There are lots of parents who don't encourage violence or criminal behaviour or simply don't know their kids are engaging in those...parents who taught their kids good values and then for whatever reasons, those kids go down a different path. Would you want to see those kinds of parents going to jail because they happened to raise a kid who got in with the wrong crowd.

I think in this case, it's easy to see that the parents were aware there were issues and even encouraged the screwy thinking of this boy.
