School Zone Problems

Well, school is all back in here and so are the school zone speeding problems. Happens every year, when school starts again. Those young folks, late for work, won't slow down for a school zone and get pulled over. And, there are those that don't have kids, or want kids, and care less about the kids that are out there.

What do you think?

Well, anyone who speeds through a school zone should be pulled over and ticketed. I don't have any kids, and it's not true that I don't care about children getting hurt or run over by a car in the street, not sure where you got that idea. I'm very watchful of any pedestrians regardless of age, and also any animals that may be crossing the street from deer to squirrels.

Slow down around school crossings. I remember when I was in 7th grade I was walking to school. We had to cross a busy 4 lane road. The girl in front of me stepped out into the crosswalk when the light turned green. She was hit and killed by a speeding driver that ran the red light. That was over 45 years ago and I still remember standing there looking at her shoes, left in the crosswalk, exactly where she was standing when she was hit.

SB, I wasn't talking about you specifically, but there are young folks that don't have kids, and don't want kids, that don't seem to care, or like, school speed zones. In fact, there have been Threads that asked the question about "kids or no kids". Obviously not in our age bracket, but there are those out there that simply don't want any kids and many that don't even want to be around kids. These are the kinds of folks that can get pulled over for speeding thru a school zone.

Classic Rocker, how do you know those are the people speeding through school zones? I don't think the issue of whether or not they have kids, or care about kids, is even relevant. These people are all about "me, me, me," and they could still be that way even with 6 kids at home.

I don't really know, but did read a thread once, on ? forum where the OP stated that she didn't want kids and she was somewhat ridiculed for saying that. So, I basically put two and two together and figured that those that don't want kids, or want to be around kids, would be the same as those that would speed thru a school zone. If I'm wrong, ok, however, there are young men and women out there that don't want kids or to be bothered by them.

In fact, not to change my thread, but do any of you remember that there use to be Adult Only apartment complexes or apartment complexes that had a section for families and a section for adults with no kids?

That's quite a stretch IMHO. People of all ages speed through school zones, construction sites, you name it. They are people who don't give a s--t about anyone else but themselves, and I'll wager that many are parents, aunts, uncles, grand-parents, etc. The only people who most likely won't be seen speeding through these areas, other than those with good common sense, are really old fogies who drive at 35 mph everywhere, from the school zone to the expressway, and some of them shouldn't be driving at all.

Good point!

It's not just school zones. It's everywhere now.

The police on my street could make a fortune on tickets.

Not everywhere, unless you have been everywhere in the U.S..

There are places where people don’t live a hectic lifestyle and is slow paced, like farming areas and Senior areas.

really old fogies who drive at 35 mph everywhere,

Dave, 35 mph? Try 15 mph! I live in a retirement community, and I swear, that's the speed some of them drive. Although we are getting an influx of baby boomers, who thank God are a livelier crowd.

In our area, there are ample signs warning about school zones, and quite often there is a local police car patrolling the area during the morning and afternoon hours when students are arriving/leaving. Anyone caught speeding through such zones is quite likely to get a pretty hefty fine. Passing a Stopped school bus can result in a fine of hundreds of dollars and loss of drivers license....and most of the school busses have cameras mounted front and rear to capture the vehicle description and plate number. As a result, we rarely have any incidents of anyone goofing off around schools, or areas where students are walking.

Most problems in school zones and other roads tend to come from new drivers on that route. Also GPS or Mapquest tend to take direct routes which frequently run in front of schools.

I lived in areas that several times a year the sheriff would set up extremely obvious speed traps with the street in front the school lined with cars and motorcyles. It was like they were looking for a fugitive. Most get the message.

Ha. The roads that go by farming areas are fair game for speeders. A cloud of dust. Yep it's everywhere.

Funny, but I've seen very, very courteous drivers in farming country. A cloud of dust is what is found in the country areas when little-to-no rain has fallen on dirt roads. My dad use to put down old oil, from a large barrel, with holes in it, using a tractor, on the road next to our house. Once the oil dried, no more dust.

Yes even excessive narcissists can have children. Idiots come in all shapes and sizes, with and without kids
I don’t happen to have children and I do sometimes speed while out on a long stretch of road but when it comes to neighbourhoods and school zones I’m very careful and always slow down. People can have common courtesy to others on the road as well as off if it. The people that aren’t courteous off the road and usually the same people uncourteous off the road.

I know, about myself, that I can be much more courteous on the road than off. But, then again, I’m not a caring and loving person all the time. Just depends on the situation.

just to lighten things up a bit, this thread reminds me of a poster I created

Yes it happens every year; school starts up. Watch your speed, slow down in school zones. Kids dart here and there and don't think, so a driver must remain alert. If there's kids in your neighborhood, be extra cautious.

I think it's a bit of a leap to say that people who do not have children of their own are OK with running them down in the street. I doubt there's any correlation between having children and speeding.
