First time I had sciatica I didn't know what it was. I thought my leg broke in the middle of the night on it's own. The pain actually starts in lower back. The first time was absolute agony & lasted for weeks. Now when I get it it is just on occasion & leaves quickly.

Besides icing back & leg & taking pain killers I have no solutions. Physical therapy did nothing.

I had it for about a year ... constantly ... then for another year off/on . The only thing that seemed to help was , while sitting, pulling my knee up to my chest [as close as i could] & holding for as long as I could with each leg ..... It stretches the buttock , and although it hurts while doing it, it does lessen the pain when ya ((slowly)) relax that leg . Then the pain seems to ease for some time.

And of course I took Tylenol , and used a walker for some time.

Please don't even mention that word. I've been in agony for over 2 months with a pinched sciatic nerve. Best treatment now would be a nerve block.

I had sciatica for the 2nd time in my life this past December. Absolute agony. I did the heat packs, cold packs, prescription pain meds, Tylenol, Aleve, stretching. Nothing helped. Finally, in mid February, the doctor said "let's try a few days of prednisone" and that worked. By the 3rd day (of 5 days of prednisone) the pain was easing away.

I had sciatica so bad about 40 years ago that I had to take a month off work (I couldn't sit in a chair). They finally gave me some sort of shot and I recovered. Hot baths helped.

It's back, but different from last time. I have an appointment next month.

Both my wife and I have tangled with sciatica over the years. She gets the quickest and most relief from acupuncture. The relief that I got from acupuncture was mild.

I have had my best luck using one of these odd devices that you can likely find at your drugstore. It doesn't really make sense to me, but it worked for me. I have also gotten a lot of help by keeping my calves warm at night by wearing over the calf long socks and/or adding an extra blanket over my lower legs.

It has been several years since I have had to deal with it, but it pops up more frequently for my wife. She believes that Yoga also helps.

I can certainly attest to the fact that when it really gets going, it can hurt like the devil. At one point, I did get a shot for it, and that provided temporary relief which I really needed at the time.
