Segway millionaire drove machine over cliff: police

A British millionaire businessman whose company builds and markets the Segway upright scooter died when he apparently rode one of them over a cliff and into a river.

West Yorkshire police said Jimi Heselden, 62, was found in the River Wharfe, at Boston Spa, near Wetherby, on Sunday.
"The incident is not believed to be suspicious and the coroner has been informed," a police spokesman said.

Danger lurks everywhere ....

He needed the four-wheel-drive model on that path.

... oh, wait ...

I thought I remembered there was talk at the time of it being a possible suicide - I guess they determined that it was just an accident.

He drove it off a cliff??!! Did he perhaps have a death wish dangerously tempting fate so much? In any event, it's a very sad story and I can't imagine riding one other than on a downtown/paved area. I've seen several people fall at intersections attempting to cross the street. Clumsy as I am, they aren't for me, but I love the concept.

Yeah ... now, I can almost respect an officer that comes rolling up on me on a fully-dressed Harley, but a Segway? I'll always have visions of Paul Blart, Mall Cop running through my mind and will probably break out in uncontrollable laughter while they're chasing me down the street ...

How well do they handle stairs??
Are they going to need sirens on them to warn the wheelchairs to get off the disabled ramps when they're chasing bank robbers or what??

And how do they handle in snow and ice? Do they come with fitted chains? Is there a cabin heater on-board? Air conditioning, for those long, hot summers?

LOTS of questions about using these for *snicker* law enforcement *giggle* ...

I just see them more suitable for circus clowns and weird liberal university professors.

We don't have to worry about snow here in sunny Queensland ...... one thing I do worry about though, is pursuits.

At what speed will the dispatcher call of the chase? 15Kph, 20? ;)

Maybe they can shoe-horn in a Lamborghini engine and get some Z-rated tires on that ride?
