Self-Checkouts

Plus I recall a rumor about them wanting to get the self checkouts in place and then have smart phone apps so you could scan your crap in there before you got to the register. People without a smart phone would be given a scanner to use. Can you imagine that crap? First time I got frustrated enough they'd be lucky if it didn't get pitched down an aisle. LOL
Sam’s Club already has that capability. I think that the Amazon stores are like that as well.
We have started to use the drive through pickup more and more, and it sidesteps the whole issue of checking out. Plus, I can look around for as long as I want to while deciding what I want to buy. Sometimes, I spend several days, adding to the cart as I remember things that we need.
Then I coordinate the pickup with some other trip (like to the fitness center), so we can do everything at once.

We can do that here too but we have a Walmart here and one in a neighboring town that's a little bit of a drive for a pick up. It depends which store has it as to where it's picked up. I don't like the idea of having to go to 2 separate stores in different towns for a few things. I could have it shipped but that comes with it's own headaches.

All grocery stores and Walmart in my area have self checkout. The exception would be Trader Joe's. Usually the line at self check out goes fast.

I am against having only self check out but I like using it. My stepfather doesn't use self checkout. He has no computer, cell phone and doesn't like anything technology. He'd be lost with only self checkout.

Winco Foods has self and regular checkout since some people do huge shopping there. You do bag your own groceries and I prefer that. I've had some bags filled so badly by baggers, I can't stand it. Cans on tomatoes etc..

I don't mind self check out for a few items but not if I have a cart full.
I have stopped going inside Walmart since the pandemic started. I do pickup or delivery there and it is so much easier. Our Walmart always had long lines so I am glad to avoid them. I buy most of my groceries at Aldi. They don't have self check out, although you do bag your own stuff.

I don't like self check outs, although I've used them a couple of times when I only have an item or two and pay cash. I prefer to wait on the line for a live cashier, and I usually pay with a check (previously filled out except for amount), so doing a self check still mandates assistance from a clerk. A couple of cashiers have thanked me for going to their register, happy to help keep them employed.

I wish the govt. would drop that unemployment crap now since supposedly the danger is over.

We are now 20 people short where I work. If this keeps up I don't know what they're gonna do cuz I will not work 7 days a week. I'm too old for that crap.
People need unemployment compensation when they have no job and are still looking. Once they get the job they don't get the unemployment any more. Or how else would they pay their rent and bills while searching!

I understand that. But right now they're just abusing it. They need to get out and look for work. There's plenty to be had now. But they're enjoying that extra free money. That's what I don't like. I'm not saying people should never be allowed unemployment.

How do you know they are abusing it? My sister gets unemployment because she lost her job and is looking for one, she is 69 and gets discriminated against because of her age. There may be plenty to be had but they don't hire everyone--for some it's harder to find a job and it takes them longer to find one. They ARE getting out and looking for work.

Yes our biggest supermarket chain here ( tesco)..are testing their first store with No tills this week in my county....

I actually hate self service tbh... but I don't like standing in queues either ..
When I worked for Morrisons I used to do at least 1 shift per week at the self checkouts by the time my 5 hour shift had finished I had a very achy back and legs....I used to hate being put on there and of course you had some customers thought they could easily steel by not scanning all their items.

.... I was absolutely against using self-checkouts anywhere. Keep the employees employed. .....
When I clicked onto this thread I was expecting "self-checkouts" to be a discussion about suicide. Anyway, as far as "Keeping the employees employed" I cannot say if the self-service has any impact on the numbers of employed but over here the self-checkouts are an addition rather than it being exclusive and there is always an employee at the thing to lend a hand if you are having trouble. I rarely use it, preferring to queue up at the register and pay either cash or card. There are almost always at least two registers open: One for "card only" and others for both cash and card. That makes a minimum of 3 employed for check-out.

I will wait all day if necessary to line up for a cashier, they've been trying to get us to use those rotten machines for about 3 years, just waiting for the excuse to sack more staff, so hell can freeze over as far as I'm concerned.
Just be sure not to purchase any frozen or refrigerated foodstuff. ;)

I can talk to machines but they never answer me, so, I prefer to be checked out by a lady, then I can check her out too. :)

Before all this covid pandymandyepic stuff, I was checking out in a Sainsburys store, the girl at the till looked really fed-up, so I said to her, "You have won todays star prize and I'm here to present it." I gave her one of my buttermints, she laughed, I laughed, now we smile at each other when I shop there......29 times each week. :ROFLMAO:

Over here 3 of the main supermarket chains are doing
"Smart Shopping", you get a hand scanner to read the
bar codes on the stuff that you want, then just bag it in
the trolley.

You go to a place of six tills, scan another code on the
screen and your shopping is downloaded from the
handset and into the till, you then pay by card, they
sometimes do a partial check of 5 items for security,
but I have noticed that usually happens if you remove
an item from the scanner, I have never had a complete
turnover of my bags, though some have.

There are fewer people on tills, I agree, but they are more
in the store, filling orders for delivery and loading shelves,
it is easier to find help these days.

Mike.
