Sen John McCain in Austalia

The senator is over here to talk security and alliances. The Australian Defence Minister, Sen Marise Paine, has announced that we will boost our presence in Afghanistan, even though Australia has never been part of NATO. It is still a training role involving some 300 personnel.

Sen McCain was also interviewed on the national broadcaster, ABC TV, and spoke frankly and well.

John McCain is confusing figure. From one side of his mouth the speaks of being disturbed by recent events and legislation. ... THEN when Congress is in session, turns around and votes along party lines.. It's not possible to figure him out... therefore.. I really don't trust him in the least.

I agree, Lolly. He just got re-elected to a 6 year term, possibly his last. He is probably more likely to say what he really feels now. But you can never tell. He may be worried about Republicans losing control of the Senate, and losing committee position. He is a puzzle sometimes.

Yes... Ole "says one thing and votes another" McCain.

I have noticed a similar tendency for parliamentarians to speak their minds more bluntly when in their last term of office.

One thing that puzzled me was that during Question Time Sen McCain was sitting alone in the gallery.
I would hope that he wasn't over here all by himself.

Something is afoot. First a visit from Sen McCain and soon we will be hosting Sec of State Rex Tillerson and Sec of Defense James Mattis. They will be meeting with our Foreign Minister Julie Bishop and Defense Minister Marise Paine. We have already announced a boost in our Afghanistan contingent, so what else is going on?
Perhaps ramping up for a high alert regarding North Korea..or just putting a plan in place for the big "if"? North Korea just launched another missile which makes 9...unless there's been more activity since that one. The threat is being taken more seriously as time goes on. Kim Jong-un is turning out to be one powerful little dough-boy.

I liked McCain. Donated to his 2000 campaign and voted for him in the primary. He was a good old school Republican in the manner of Eisenhower. I was really disgusted by the way the Republican Party treated him, especially during the South Carolina Primary. And when they nominated Bush that did it for me with the Republicans.

But when he ran in 2008 I could not vote for him. He had changed. The far right of the Republican Party had done what the North Vietnamese couldn't do. They broke him, made him crawl on his belly like a reptile in order to get the nomination. Forced that nut job Sarah Palin on him.

Besides that, Barack Obama was running against him and I thought it would be way cool to have a black President!:cool1:

My thoughts exactly, Trade. I crossed over and voted for him in the 2000 primary. Didn't want Bush. He certainly did change by 2008.

I agree with Lolly's view of John McCain. He's said and done admirable things, but also the opposite kinds of things, such as being one of our most partisan senators. Will the real John McCain please stand up ?
