Serial Cat Killer Loose in Washington State

Very disturbing to read about these cat deaths in Washington State, and I hope they find the killer very soon. :( More here.

On Saturday night, Kathy Harrigan fed and brushed Harley, a deaf tabby cat who she had been taking care of for the past two years.

Leaving him in the heated outdoor cat house that she had built him, she went to bed. The next morning when she woke up, she told Q13 Fox News in Tacoma, Harley wasn’t waiting for her by the door as usual.

It didn’t take long before the police showed up with bad news. Harley had been found mutilated on a neighbor’s lawn, they told her - making the semi-feral 20-year-old tabby’s death the seventh in a string of killings in recent months that officials in Thurston County, Washington, believe is the work of a serial cat killer.

In each incident, Erika Johnson, an animal cruelty services investigator for the county, told Q13, the cat has been cut open with a scalpel and had its spine removed. Then its body has been prominently displayed in a public place for people to find.

Very disturbing! Hope they catch this person soon because if he can do that, he can do other things also. Many serial killers tortured animals when they were young. :(

Cruelty to animals really pi$$es me off.

Several years ago dogs and cats were being found with their muzzles taped shut, completely skinned and disemboweled and somehow veterinarians were able to determine that this happened to the animals while they were still alive.....as I recall no one was ever arrested and charged with the crimes and they eventually stopped.

It would take a totally emotionless, cold and black-hearted human being to do something like this to a defenseless animal.

Sometimes I feel that the punishment for these types of crimes should mimic the actual crime.

I have no tolerance for people who abuse animals like leaving chained on a short heavy chain in all weather, 24 hours a day, with no affection and not enough food or water. But those who kill and mutilate like this, I tend to feel like Ike does, as extreme as that may sound. I don't know how I'd react if it was my cat he did this to.

I read the OP with more than normal interest as here in the UK I had some knowledge of some pretty appalling cruelty to cats, and tried to inform my local police station a crime had been committed in their area, only to be told they wouldn't/couldn't take the details, and I had to contact a voluntary organisation to report mistreatment of any animals (here in the UK the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, or RSPCA being the most prominent).

I still believe I was being fobbed off by an uninformed or ill informed counter staff woman or officer, but I did then attempt to inform the RSPCA that there was evidence available that five cats had been allowed to starve to death locally (they may have had an earlier anonymous call about the incident as I heard about it second hand). It took me an hour to find their number as I don't have the internet connected where I'm staying right now, and had to contact a friend to look up the number. I was informed that the RSPCA couldn't tell me whether any action had been taken concerning this dreadful incident, but appeared to confirm that they were the first people to contact should animal cruelty, or such a crime have been committed (though I still don't believe it can be true).

I know our police and emergency services are very busy, but you have to say how can it be in the interests of animals, and upholding the law to put obstacles in the way of someone trying to report such a crime?

True. I hope they catch this monster before more animals die. (Or before he graduates to humans.)

Can someone please come up with an assessment of the "mass killing" of cats I've tried to highlight?

Is starving cats to death any better than whatever the guy featured done, cruelly killing cats by other means?

Have you ever heard of catch, get them spayed or neutered, and then release back, to limit reproducing and then having a heart for other creatures besides human beings?

Good advice I'm sure, although in this case two were tom cats, one was a female cat unable to breed for some reason, one a young cat, leaving just one to breed and keep the farm supplied with future generations of cats to keep the rodent population under control without the use of poisons etc.

However, if yours is the only response I'll get here to my story of appalling cruelty towards these defenceless animals, I'll have to conclude that those showing natural outrage at the OPs newspaper story from the USA, cannot somehow feel the same way about a story they don't hear in the papers (a reversal of "fake news" you might say :( ).

Mutilating the dead is a hallmark of a psycho deviant and often these people will move up to human victims so this is more serious than starving a pet to death although both are reprehensible.

Can you be so sure of yourself there?

Have you watched any animal starving to death, or tried to imagine the level of suffering (I'm in no way trying to diminish the attention this terrible man is quite rightly getting by saying right under our noses there are other crimes seemingly getting no attention)?
