Serial killer on the loose near Portland Oregon? 6 woman found dead in local woods.

Horrible. Being from what was once considered 'the murder capital of the world' Santa Cruz, Ca, this is giving me a visceral response.

This would be a good time to organize the National Guard and go on a hunt for this or these creeps. If it’s happening in the mountain area, they may have survival skills, which would point towards someone with military training.
Really ? What a complete waste of time that would be. The investigators will be working the crime scenes, looking for actual forensic evidence. That is what breaks this type of case, that and a large reward offer. JimB.

That crime scene was already investigated. What, you think they spend a week looking for forensics? Besides that, you can start the search 300 or more yards from the point of contact. We do searches all the time with hundreds of people. The cops make up a grid and the group follows the grid. This is usually fine just days after someone goes missing or at a crime scene. I’ve been involved in searches. We don’t wait forever. CSI people can do their work in just a few days or less.

First, it isn't one scene, its multiple locations. Second, you seem to think that a murderer is going to hang around the area? Of course not. Your idea of a search MAY work, if the search is for a dead body, not a live criminal. JImB.

Very puzzling news item. The Portland police seem to be doing their best to downplay the "serial killer" possibility. (Beginning of tourist season, perhaps?), and no one seems to know anything about any of the murders. It does seem very strange that so many young, healthy women were found dead of various causes, most of them sound like murders, but not the same type and some are "unknown causes." Could be a serial killer, or it could just be a bizarre coincidence. But why the hush-hush from the authorities? At least according to the news items, it doesn't sound like there is a lot of investigating going on. Usually, the police ask people with any information about cases like this to please contact the authorities immediately, and they provide phone numbers, etc. Here, they seem to be discouraging anyone from doing anything.

I do wonder what's going on.

In murder investigations, certain information is "held back from the public " so that the investigators will have the advantage if they make an arrest. The facts held back are things that only the killer would know, about the crime scenes, and the victims, and the method of killing the victims. Police are under no legal pressure to reveal every detail to the press. In fact, keeping the facts about the case confidential, the investigators are able to work leads without them being splashed across the 6 PM news. JimB.

Wuh-oh. A suspect has been caught and got an early release from prison in 2021. Was convicted of trying to strangle a police K-9. Could be responsible for up to 6 known murders.

They say serial killers frequently start with animals.
The traditional three "childhood signs " are bed wetting, animal abuse, and arson. These are the signs that should be paid attention to, in children, especially boys. JimB.

Those are the major signs of a serial killer. Also most have an overbearing abusive parent with multiple spouses. Most serial killers will keep mementos of their kills. And most will frequently return to either the scene of the killing, or to the burial site to masturbate. Most killers say there's a good side and a bad side of their personality. When they kill, it's the bad side coming out in a frenzy. What's even weirder. people, who known them, report that the killers seem like two people -one normal, the other cold. To me, it's amazing how similar most serial killers are alike.

You have touched on some of the cardinal signs that Homicide investigators may "hold back from the Public " during their press conferences. A few of the others........Most serials stay within their race, in terms of victims. They tend to be loners, who roam around at night. Many of them have a "victim type " in terms of the physical description of their victims. Serials go through a "learning process " as they kill, perfecting their methods and practices. Usually, but not all ways, the method of killing will stay the same throughout the victims. Mentally, serials, along with other murderers, are described as " organized OR unorganized " in terms of how they operate and behave. A few serials have been found to form a "working relationship " with another person, and the 2 commit crimes ( not just murders ) together. JimB.

What about married serial killers. The recently arrested Long Island serial killer lured his victims under the premise of a business transaction/sex being his victims were mostly prostitutes. He was married and had children of his own and a step child.

BKT was married for 34 years. Yes they commit their murders alone but other than stepping out for a few hours they're not alone.

The Portland killer in the OP apparently has a girlfriend and kids of his own.

I watched a short series on Edmund Kemper. A Santa Cruz killer. Wow was he sick and twisted and his insane mother sure fit that profile.

There was so much going on in Santa Cruz at the time, I can't remember all of it.

Here we go again. Crazies on the increase and on the prowl. Everyone beware; especially if walking in the woods. You might go in but you might never get out!
Sounds similar to the movie Jaws tagline. 😉 "You'll never go in the water again!" or even Jaws II: "Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water!" Anyway, there are always crazies prowling. Just got to be mindful of one's surroundings.

Here in Toronto Bruce McDonald was a serial killer, but within a sub set of society that most people don't know about. Bruce was a homosexual sadist, and cannibal. Yes, he ATE some of his victims, then buried the remainder of each body. He typical victim was a "bear man " a homosexual man who was physically large, hairy, and a loner within the gay community. Of his 8 victims, 6 were of middle eastern heritage, and they were either in Canada illegally, or they were estranged from their families.

Outwardly Bruce McDonald was a ordinary self employed landscaper, who had been married and had adult children. His murdering career ran for about 8 years in total. He was eventually caught, based on the diary of one of his victims, which mentioned a "date with Bruce " on a white board in the victim's kitchen. The TPS knew that the victim's small apartment building in the Gay Village had good video cameras, so they ran back the tapes to the day of the "date with Bruce " and came up with McDonald's unique model of Jeep Cherokee Special Anniversary 2004 van. That vehicle was later found at Dom's Auto wreckers, and tests turned up 4 different DNA sample from the interior. TPS put Bruce under 24 hour surveillance, which turned up a rented garage that he stored equipment in. A cadaver dog was brought in and Maxo reacted to the smell of decomp in some of the planter boxes in the garage.

Bruce McDonald was convicted of eight counts of first degree murder, and sentenced to life in prison, which is where he is today. JimB.

Sounds like we all watch way too much Criminal Minds! I've watched all the episodes so many times that I could probably go work for the FBI myself! :ROFLMAO:

Many think serial killers are a rarety but are more common than most think. And everyone winds up saying the same things when they are caught it's either -Not, him such a nice guy or I knew there was something about them. It's real easy to analyze after the fact but before something happens?

Just a note now seeing reports the suspect in the op also volunteered for Oregon firefighting which helped get him an early release even though a career criminal. I think he knew how to tell and show people what they wanted to hear. He apparently has had numerous girlfriends and children. Sounds like a manipulator to have gotten close enough to those the woman/victims for. the kill.

Here in Canada ANYONE may arrest a person who they find......Commtting an indictable offense, or about to commit one. Section 491 gives that power to ANY Canadian. Three caveats. The person being arrested must be TOLD that they are under arrest, the name of the actual charge, and they must be turned over to a Police Officer, as soon as possible under the circumstances. Link to section 491 Criminal Code of Canada, and the rules about it's use.https://www.canada.ca/en/news/archive/2011/02/citizen-arrest-self-defence-act.html

A example....A person sees another person breaking into a car. That is a indictable offense in Canada. The observer does two things. They call 911 and inform the Police of the location and the physical description of the subject. They then arrest the subject and hold them for the Police to arrive, under section 491 of the Canadian Criminal Code. The subject is not beaten up, the Police take over the subject, and the citizen is given a case number, and the Crown Attorney will contact them when the matter comes to trial. All quite legal in Canada under the law here. JimB.

I wonder though. They tell the criminal that he's under arrest. Does the criminal just stand there without trying to fight his way out of it?

Jim, following up on Devi here. If the person flees after arrest, can they be charged with Escape or such?

That is a reasonable question. The reality is that the person making the arrest MAY USE AS MUCH FORCE AS IS REQUIRED TO CONTROL THE PERSON BEING ARRESTED. Typically a arrest is completed without the use of force, by Police in Canada. Only about 5 percent of the time does the arrest involve physical fighting. Resisting arrest by assaulting a Police officer is an indictable offense in Canada, and upon conviction it brings a sentence of more than 2 years in prison, exclusive of any other charges that may be laid by the Crown Attorney. JimB.
