Seventies Memories

Holly, the 70's are a faint memory. We had a severe recession in Detroit, sent me backing back to Texas- yea the recession was nationwide.
really had difficulty getting a decent job. A scary decade due to economics. That is about all I remember, that too is scary.
This thread is jogging my memory, had forgotten CB radios, post 76 brought back Bell Bottom trousers.
Need more post for an old man's memory: 78 and holding.

Dolly, I wonder if your OH remembers the motorbike 'Cruises' along Southend seafront Golden Mile back then and in the end were banned.
Oh yes indeed he does..he was born right behind the Kursaal on the front.... :D that was a very long time ago, when it was a nice place.. and he later moved to nearer the airport when he was a child, but that\s only 2 miles from the front anyway.. and later still to Old leigh..

here OTOH in the 70's jobs were abundant, ( at least the first half before we joined the EU) and we could literally walk out of one job one day and start another the next ..I did that many times while trying to decide what I wanted to do with my life.

My Hubby took up Shotokan karate in the 70's and dont think he got a belt but was good at it and try yo get me to be his contender but NO WAY JOSE!! 🤣

I had a pal who lived in Victoria Avenue leading up to the sea front. Hubby and I went to Sarfend so many times I've lost count and for me it was the family resort we went to and know it like the back of my hand. Yes, I expect it's changed but I Like then esplanade and the refurb they did with the lottery grant I think the council were awarded. some years ago. Southend is a very special place for me with so many happy memories and dont think of the changes there and maybe looking through rose tinted glasses

Old Leigh!! I love that place and recall happy times there and having shellfish treats at Osbornes and drinks in the Peter Boat pub ansd the Cricketers opposite......:giggle:

The peter Boat was my o/h's' local, he lived just a few doors up from it... and we go down every year and never fail to get lunch at Osbornes.. . I've got loads of pics somewhere. Hubs just reminded me of all the custom cars that used to drive along the front... oh and as a child he lived in a road just off Victoria avenue.. .. that leads directly onto the front at the far end .. past the statue of Queen Victoria..

I took this photo...

I'll make an album on the photo thread when I get a bit more time, with photos of it all.. when was the last time you were there?

Did the Rubik Cube come out in the 70's or 80's ? Ive still got one somewhere and never managed to do it
70's. My daughter used to astonish everyone, because she was only 5 and she could solve it really quickly, I couldn't... but she was 5 at the end of the 70's... correction she was 5 years old in '81 I'm losing my mind... :D but it was still the 70's for the cube...

Oh yes please Dolly..I would love that!! Last time I was in Southend was over 6 years ago and we stayed at a nice hotel on the seafront one we used a few times but not the Roslyn. I want to go back this year if I can and my friends have invited me to stay with them in South Benfleet near Southend. Look forward when you have time to see the pics and any input you may want to chat about

The 70's......sigh.

Started the 70's out living in Turkey. I was pregnant most of 1970. I had a pair of "elephant bells" (jeans with hugely flared legs below the knee) left over from the 60's, which I converted into maternity jeans. One day I wore them into the base, topped off with a psychedelic flowing peasant top. My late husband's commanding officer took one look at me, called him in and yelled "TELL YOU WIFE TO WEAR SOME PROPER CLOTHES AND STOP LOOKING LIKE A G-DAMNED HIPPIE!!!" So, I got some "proper" maternity clothes and stopped looking like a g-damned hippie.

Next was six years in Detroit. 'nuff said. I did win a "sexy legs" contest. I could rock a mini-skirt back then.

Finished out the 70's in Florida. Went through the bra-less stage. Had the requisite Qiana wrap-around disco dress, but didn't "disco".
