This subject comes up a lot on another health group and a lot on the retirement section. I've never had a shingles vaccine nor will I get one and I'll be 80 soon. I had chicken pox when I was 6 or so but I've been using calming supplements for years and Magnesium I believe is so overlooked and there is a lot of info that many are deficient. Everything I've heard is that it's from a lot of stress, and I have a friend who had a couple outbreaks when she was training a puppy in her early retirement years. That was like bringing home a newborn in your 60's.

Anyway, here are some good tips and I don't tell anyone what to do or not just what I do and believe.

I can say: get your magnesium levels in check as this mineral is so important for so much good health.

I was offered the shingles vaccine free of charge and I turned it down.

I don't take well to needles. They sometime leave my arm sore for months.

So the doctor now gives me the flu vaccine by nose spray.

It's not the needle so much, but infections do occur, it's the solutions going into our bodies. I have not done any vaccines for over 35 yrs.

I've had a flu shot every year for as long as I can remember, have had the shingles shot and last year had a hepA vaccine shot. Never had a bad reaction to any of them, and of course, never had the flu or shingles or HepA. I don't take any "supplements" and never will. I trust my Doctor, who has actually been to med school. :)

That's fine and we all have our choices of healing. I see my integrative MD once a year to check in for labs and refills of my 3 meds. I've had complications from meds and surgery and and once/twice burned.....don't go back for more..If there is something I can't "fix" then I see my doctor.

After refusing to get the Shingles shot for years, I reluctantly got one in 2015 because my husband kept urging me, don't plan to get any more. I still don't take any flu shots and try to avoid any vaccines that aren't absolutely necessary.

Actually, there are now two different Shingles vaccine available. The older one, Zostavax, is still in use, but the newer vaccine, Shingrix, is now the more preferred vaccine. Shingrix is also recommended for those that have already had the older Shingles vaccine, Zostavax. I did have the older vaccine, but I am still procrastinating as to whether to get the new vaccine or not.

I had a pilot friend that had Shingles on and off for years. He usually got it on his abdomen and/or on his back at the same time. It was ugly to say the least. He suffered greatly with the pain and missed a good deal of work off and on for the many years that I knew him. He was finally able to go on permanent disability because he would get the Shingles and it would stay with him for months causing him to miss a lot of work. He died just a few years ago from ALS. Whatever form of ALS he had, he went downhill very quickly From the time he was diagnosed until his death may have been only about a year.

Had the old shingles shot years ago and had the first shot of the new one 7 days ago. I had a really bad case of chicken pox when I was 6 with my eyes swollen shut. Since I had a bad case then my doctor advised me to get it. The only side effects I had was a sore arm for a couple of days. Go back in June for the 2nd shot as its a 2 shot vaccine. Cost me $47.00 copay. Retail showed to be $170.00 on the package from Walgreens. Worth it to me.

I had Shingles last December and it was no party. It followed the nerve from my left shoulder and down my left arm to my hand. It was miserable and I have scaring from the Shingles blisters. The residual nerve pain after the blisters heal is extremely painful and can go on for weeks/months. I didn't remember ever having chicken pox so I was totally surprised to have Shingles. I gladly took the two prescription medications the doctor prescribed for me.

I have not had the vaccine since I thought I didn't carry the chicken pox virus. Surprise!! :D Not sure how the vaccine helps since I thought a vaccine was to inject a small amount of the virus into the body. If the body already has the virus, just exactly how does that work??

I do not take supplements and don't plan to start. I believe in eating a decent diet and exercise for good health.

Ditto. Except I do take a multivitamin daily. Is that a "supplement?"

Multi vitamins are supplements, supplements are the gap fillers that foods don't all do for us and especially with aging. I started on my supplement path in my 50's and I'll be 80 soon. We supplement people are also called alternative holistic healers so to speak and most do NOT get the vaccines as we do our best to keep our immune systems strong.

As I'm sure you all have heard the controversary behind vaccines. I had my vaccination when I went to first grade and that's been it. I "think" I had a couple flu vaccines along the road but none to speak of. I had a flu when I was 18 and that's been it. I keep an arsenal of remedies for the "just in case times". We all pick and choose. Whatever works I say.

It is puzzling that the shingles concerned simply faded away. Now it is hepatitis C on the boob tube. It makes me wonder if it isn't a ploy to make money.

So sorry to hear about your friend. My first wife passed away from ALS about 15 years ago. Typically, from diagnosis to the end takes about 18 months. AFAIK there is no link between shingles and ALS.

It's so much about money and I won't get started there. Sickness is more money, prevention is not as much money...that's how I see it.

From what I've read, the multivitamins really don't do much, if anything at all, for most people. I don't have link. Sorry.

Probably true. And honestly, I forget to take my vitamin more times than not. :D I was taking a "hair, skin and nails" type but never noticed any benefit whatsoever.

My nails and hair grown like mad since I got my Vit D levels optimum, are you all on top of your Vit D levels, there is a lot of deficiency from all the info out there.

Not meaning to be snarky or anything, but Jack Kevorkian went to medical school, too.

Indeed, and IMO he was as they say,.. "rail-roaded" ....I certainly hope all states will stand up & reconsider the issue.

There is a long list of dead doctors and questions about their mysterious deaths. I would like to check out on my terms and not on pharma terms.

Yes, my Vit D levels are normal. Of course, I enjoy spending time outdoors and in the sun. :gasp:
