Shingles

Not sure if the vaccinations I have were live or what, but I have gotten them twice. The first was about 10 years ago, a single shot, more recently I got the two shot version. I was told it was more effective than the old one.

My wife had shingles just before I got the first one. It was awful, seeing that is what drove me to get it. In the US I understand that Medicare now pays for it, that was not the case last year when I got the vaccine. It was relatively expensive ~$250, but well worth it if I don't get what my wife had. So far no shingles here.

I have been vaccinated twice for shingles. One about ten years ago and all went well. Again, about two years ago with the latest and greatest vaccine. After the first shot I was stiff and sore and felt miserable for about three days. I was very upset and thought seriously about not getting the second dose. I did get the second dose and was glad I did for I had no side effects from it. I found out that many people have a reaction to the first shot but not to the second.

I have not had Shingles. I have had the Shingles Vaccine Shingrix both 1 & 2.

All six of my Aunts Uncles (when living, now all deceased) had Shingles, very
painful for all of them except one Uncle had just a mild case.

None of them those years ago of say 15 years ago, had ever been vaccinated.

The CDC says:

How Well Does Shingrix Work?

Two doses of Shingrix provide strong protection against shingles and postherpetic neuralgia (PHN), the most common complication of shingles.

  • In adults 50 to 69 years old with healthy immune systems, Shingrix was 97% effective in preventing shingles; in adults 70 years and older, Shingrix was 91% effective.
  • In adults 50 years and older, Shingrix was 91% effective in preventing PHN; in adults 70 years and older, Shingrix was 89% effective.
  • In adults with weakened immune systems, Shingrix was between 68% and 91% effective in preventing shingles, depending on their underlying immunocompromising condition.
In people 70 years and older who had healthy immune systems, Shingrix immunity remained high throughout 7 years following vaccination.

Yes, I did not know that medicare will pay for the shot now, I stopped by the pharmacy today to pick up prescriptions and I asked what the price was for the Shingles shot now and they told me if I had medicare part D there was no charge starting this year....so I got the first shot will get the second one in 2 months.

anyone had a non live shingles vac?
iv had shingles,iv had a vac for it,now iv been offered a non live vac,,,,,,,,,,,,,to have or not to have

I've had both the old shingles vac which I think was a live-vac (got it when I was 60 yrs old), then I had a mild case of shingles on my leg a little over a year ago (I think, maybe a bit longer) which hurt in a burning sort of way. Late last spring and summer I got the 2-shot series of the newer Shingrix which is a non-live type vac.

I've personally known two people that got shingles, one was a neighbor in his 90s who got it in his ear and suffered terribly from the pain. The other was a horse riding instructor that used to come to my place to give me lessons, and she got it on her chest and the pain was bad enough that she said she couldn't work, and then she decided to just retire altogether.

I have had the two dose, no problems. My Mother got shingles on her face. She suffered permanent nerve damage. Her health started to deteriorate after that. The pain was horrible. My Mom was one tough lady but she would shriek in pain during that time. If I had to get a shot every year to avoid getting it I would.

Shingles at 39. Lasted ~30days. Start to scabs falling off. Pain and itching kept me awake for ~10days.
Post neurologic irritation nuisance pain down thigh for 20 years.
Both types of vaccines.
Both vaccines gave me a reaction that put me down for 1 day, each time.
Older version vaccine no longer available.
Your choice of pain levels or not.
Having had shingles, I chose not to have shingles again and took the lessor pain.
