Shoplifter in California arrested 120 Times For Stealing $40,000 From The Same Store

I read somewhere that stealing from those self-service kiosks is very easy, and has become very common. At my supermarket, they have one store employee, who is often distracted, keeping an eye on up to 6 customers at once, who are scanning their items and throwing them into their bags. I bet people who want to steal have found that they often get away with it. And if they are caught, they can always say they made a mistake. It's basically an honor system.

I suspect the stores know all about this, and consider the occasional theft a lot cheaper for them than paying extra checkout personnel. Never mind the morality, most of their boards of directors are only interested in the bottom line.

Some stores starting to put barriers and stacks of heavier merchandise like packs of water near the entrance. Local stores around are now going out of there way to block off unused checkout lanes. And just like spray paint in many hardware stores a lot of merchandise will be kept in a locked cabinet or cage. I remember when formula and diapers were a high theft item and they had to be locked up and this is going back the better part of 10 years. Problem is now it's not just a few specific items it's frequently anything they can get or just lots of stuff.
