Shopping for a Nightgown

I've been looking online at what the big box stores nearest me (WalMart, Boscov's and Target) have in the way of women's nightgowns. My old garments are getting so thin, you could read through them. Problem is that I don't see any styles I like. I want one where the sleeves come just to the elbow and the hem just below the knee and material that's not too flimsy or heavy; or necklines too high or too low. I see short sleeves, long sleeves and sleeveless; ankle length or a hem that just comes to the hip. Thay look great on young thin women, but I am not young OR thin. BTW - don't suggest ordering online - that is not an option available to me. I have to shop at a brick & mortar store.

Have you considered sewing your own? That would be a fairly easy project and you wouldn't have to shop all over town to find what you want.

Do you have a JC Penney brick and mortar near you? This is the length you want... not quite to the elbow, but I haven't seen many nightgowns with 3/4 length sleeves. (I realize this clearance item isn't the size you're looking for, but it shows what kind of things they offer.)

I looked at the nearest Penny's website and only these two were available for immediate pick-up - both are too high-hemmed and too low neckline.

Land's End carries those in cotton. (No ironing needed, the sleeves a little shorter) if you don't want to purchase online, some of their products are available at Sears or Kohl's.
LL Bean has some too, if there is a store by you.

I can commiserate with you, Deb. I’m searching for a winter housecoat that has 3/4 length sleeves. Absolutely none anywhere.

Ignore the length in the photos. There’re on 5’10” models. That part would probably be ok.

Look's like the brand might have gone bankrupt in 2009 (if I'm understanding my web search). It is too bad you don't buy online because it looks like there are a couple used ones on Ebay. When I was working I had a favorite brand of top and I used to get used ones from ebay, though about 50% of the time I wouldn't like what arrived and I'd donate it to Goodwill, but I gradually built up a bunch that I really liked.
The 'Vermont Country Store' catalog might have some similar nightgowns, do you buy from catalogs?

I probably sound picky, but I've been wearing these for 20 years. Any other stye would be uncomfortable. I think I got them at WalMart.

I have some old heavy cotton, long sleeved nightgowns (granny style) I tried to wear and it felt like I was wearing a coat in bed.

I guess it depends on what you don't like about online, if you want to try it on, then yes buying by catalog is the same as online, but if it is about payment method, then buying from a catalog allows using checks.

Something like this? If you find something you like, call Vermont Country Store customer service. Explain that you can only buy with a check or money order.
I'm sure they would allow you to order on paper and include a check or money order and ship after X number of days when your payment clears.

My journey of nite wear is my own creation, and maybe many would think it odd.

Many of you may have read my posts on what we all wear.
I’ve posted that I wear house dress, todays’ version, sleeveless sun dresses, and strapless sun dresses.

Back to my nite wear…..strapless type…..elastic at the top…..obviously to hold it up ……elastic waist……the top part is very blouse type, loose…..not skin tight…..and the bottom is just straight, below the knees.
Use very flowy fabric.

I don’t like sleeves, pants, shorts, or any top that has shoulders etc, for sleeping.

Have been wearing what i described for more years that I can remember…..sewing is great, because I make what is comfy for me.

Similar story. In winter I wear soft cotton long sleeve tees and loose flannel (Boxer brand) bottoms. Summer I wear men's size XL lightweight tees with women's lightweight sleep shorts.

I'm a restless covers-off, covers-on, sleeper who gets tangled in nightgowns.

See, everyone is different. I don't like legs on my sleepware. The last time I wore jammies, I was probably 8 years old.

I feel like I walk in a store begging for them to take my money but there is absolutely nothing I would even want waste it on.

A few years ago I needed jeans. I like elastic waist, for obvious reasons. I looked all through the slacks in WalMart and couldn't find any. I asked a clerk and she said in effect, "I haven't seen those in YEARS."
