Should Old Nazi 'Ghost' Resort Be Used, Demolished Or Preserved

Should an old Nazi regime designed and built resort be used, demolished or preserved? Design chosen by Hitler himself and has Third Reich architecture.

Must admit some things the Nazi era Germans built were built to last setting aside their politics. There are already a lot of standing buildings and infrastructure that were built with Third Reich era technology and skilled labor.

I get the urge to demolish it but there are already too many structures from that era still standing and in use. The Colosseum in Rome is still standing as many other structures from tyrannical history. Not only should history be preserved may it should be used because again if nothing else Germany produced excellent engineers, craftsman and manufacturing processes. I believe the Olympic Stadium in Berlin is the same one where Hitler tried to showcase Nazi supremacy to the world. I have no problems with it being used.

I'm looking at more pictures of this resort and I am astounded of the condition of these buildings. This wasn't a torture or extermination facility. It is a monument to arrogance and even stupidity. But it looks livable after some renovation. Eliminate Nazi propaganda in these building. If you think about all the time and effort this took these same resources could've been used elsewhere by Germany.

I seen occupied buildings in worse shape than this. This has been abandoned for 3/4 of a century.

What not a better way to thumb the nose at the ghost of Nazi arrogance by letting the masses live in buildings designed for the "masters" of the "master race".

This complex looks very bleak and ugly with no redeeming architectural beauty - looks like a prison, so I would agree with Jim, needs to be blasted out of existence. I also read somewhere it had been used by the soviets at one time. So I don't think its a keeper.

If we got rid of all the "monuments to arrogance and stupidity", there would go most of our pork-barrel projects (the road to nowhere, the bridge to nowhere, the whatever-you-want to nowhere) which wouldn't be a bad thing...hmmmm...

I'm looking at this resort and I know of high rise public housing projects that were built well after 1940 around 1960sish and demolished well before this year and they didn't hold up as well nor was the design that exceptional. This also shows when one faction of government gets their way-wasteful spending. This was still under construction while German troops were freezing on the Russian front with summer clothes. This was a waste in more ways than one. But I think it still could be used.

I'll bet the Colosseum was once on someone's demolition list, if only they had the dynamite back then. And those stones are very big. So now they're stuck with it, ugly as it is and very nasty.

Yeh, stuck with an historical tourist attraction.

$$$$$$$

I wouldn't want to see it or stay in it as a tourist. I think it would be best if they could dismantle it and re-use at least some of the materials rather than wasting them.

The Eiffel Tower was criticized highly as unnecessary and an eyesore. It was only supposed to be a temporary structure and was scheduled to be demolished in 1909. Ahhh, what a loss to romance that would have been.....

In San Diego between 1915-1917 the worlds fair was held and all of the Spanish inspired buildings were built. They still stand and are major attractions there.

When we were stationed in Germany, I worked in a US Army HQ. The building was an old Nazi government building of some sort. All the old Nazi markings were either obliterated or covered up. It was just a well-constructed brick building, that's all.

Its interesting that over time yesterdays architecture which was considered ugly at the time, often become somehow attractive to later generations.
The exception to my eyes are the soulless concrete buildings similar to the Nazi ones discussed here, of which we have a fair number in the UK. They remain ugly to me and I can't imagine them ever seeing them in any other way, but maybe future generations will judge them differently.

These do look attractive to me and worth preserving, but then I guess they are based on a much older Spanish style of architecture.

But, it's historic. It may be an eyesore but it could be useful to students who do or will study the period. Some tourist somewhere may be interested in seeing it. I'd vote to preserve it or use it in some way.

We stayed in a hotel in Beijing that was built by the Russians during the Cold War. It was fairly featureless on the outside in the Soviet utilitarian style but inside it had had a makeover and was very pleasant. Also, the security was very good.

No reason to take it out on buildings that have never been associated with cruelty.
Even old colonial gaols are preserved over here.

Hitler had Speer design Germania that would be the center of the world during the thousand year Reich. It was a brilliant plan that thankfully didn't have a chance to come to fruition...

Yes, destroy all, pretend that era in German history never existed, also cut it from all history books! :what:

Gee, it would be nice if that era in history really didn't happen, but that is not very realistic, is it? Personally, I care not what they do with it. Somebody else's problem, and it does look like a big one.
