Should This Year's Summer Olympics In RIO Just Be Cancelled?

I don't know. Many think ZIKA alone is reason enough to cancel or move the Olympics.

Political corruption and goings on could literally hurl Brazil into civil war at anytime especially with a big impeachment vote 3 days prior to the Olympics.

And crime is still rampant including a horrendous gang rape involving upto 30 men.

This was not just one perpetrator which is bad enough, this was a pack of predators. There is a dangerous mob mentality in Brazil right now and I cannot picture the Olympics going off without incident. Nor will Brazil's immediate future be trouble free.

Maybe they are hoping that instead of accelerating the process towards breaking Brazil's back, the Olympics will prevent the breakage, or at least delay it until something will hopefully happen to fix it all.

Or maybe they're committed now and can't back out.

Where is it truly safe anymore? Remember Munich? We need these celebratory venues. Life isn't safe for the majority of people, it never was. Go Brazil.

Munich caught the world off guard because no one thought that anyone with mess with Olympics. Different story.

There are distinct differences between Rio and Munich. For starters Germany was not in political turmoil, experiencing civil unrest & public corruption on the scale Rio/Brazil is if at all. Another being there was no known looming disease outbreak like Zika. And Germany basically being rebuilt after World War II had a much newer and more modern infrastructure than Rio/Brazil. Olympic preparation is already stressing the economy and infrastructure which they have literally and figuratively failed to clean up with warning/advance notice.

This is not just about safety for athletes and tourists but the stability of the entire country of Brazil. I don't think it's wise to hold a massive international event on the eve of what could be civil war or major unrest.

Agree with the idea that a lot of palm greasing went on. The events don't even interest me any more. Amateur designation long gone. They are all sponsored professionals. My sympathy is with the little teams of 5 or so from some impoverished country. Polluted waters, zika, civic unrest, doping, bribing, who needs it.

Saw that a pro baseball player from the States (Rodriguez-not sure what team) contracted Zika virus while visiting Rio and is highly recommending athletes skip the Olympics. Said he was very, very sick with it-in bed for two weeks and a long recovery afterwards.

"Hello, Rio"

I'm watching a VOD about Rio de Janeiro and the Olympics right now that is probably a promo video, but it's not a hard-sell. It's about the different venues in different parts of the country. They've just showed the big soccer stadium where the opening and closing ceremonies will be held. The venues look really nice. I just saw a note that the opening ceremonies parade will include a delegation of refugees in Rio.

I'm not gonna get all stressed out about this all the problems people are posting about. I trust Rio to know what it's doing, trust Brazil to be able to carry this off. Maybe, as someone said here, the World Cup drew fewer athletes, fewer spectators. I don't know, and I really don't care. That was a huge event, with huge crowds. I saw those myself. I didn't hear about anyone having any horrible experiences. Hot, muggy weather -- sure. They had that in the Atlanta Games.

So I'm gonna look forward to watching the Olympics as I always do, hope to see some rugby which I haven't seen in the Olympics before, and hope and pray that some of the many sports stations I have now will show more events than I've gotten to see in any previous Summer Games. I got to see more events in the last Winter Games because of all these channels, so I'm looking forward to seeing everything this summer! :)
