Should women be allowed to go topless?

Just recently the statue of David was deemed obscene and inappropriate for public view by some group. They made a pretty big stink about it too.
I guess one person's art is another person's pornography. The weak link in the chain seems to be in what's in a person's mind, which may say a lot more about the viewer than the object.

On the beach last week. I often see lovely young women laying front down, but they unhook the back of their suit so only their back is bare. I worry about these girls as they are usually so pretty and in great shape. Never saw anyone being untoward with them, but I worry just the same.
It seems only natural for one gender to be attracted to the other, and even admire, but it is up to society to teach and educate that admiring is one thing, but you need to understand limits and boundaries.

It is my guest men are more likely to agree to topless women than women who would agree.
You very well may be right about that, but it seems rather odd because most women want equal rights, whether they choose to exercise them or not.

I am beginning to wonder whether the OP has any idea of what “equal rights” means to a woman. Why the movement was started and why even today woman are fighting for those rights.

Well this is what the fight is about:
Providing women and girls with equal access to education, health care, decent work, and representation in political and economic decision-making processes; seeks to end the legal distinctions between men and women in terms of divorce, property, employment, and other matters

Women's rights include the right to live free from violence and discrimination; to enjoy the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health; to be educated; to own property; to vote; and to earn an equal wage.

Where are women fighting for rights to bare their chests???
Quite frankly, I think women these days have more important issues on their mind.

Ever since the Puritans got off the boat................sigh..................

My daughter and I had my little (3 years old) great-granddaughter at the park. She had spilled something on herself and we had pulled off her shirt. This evidently offended someone who sent their own child over to ask if that was a girl or a boy. They weren't sure if they should be offended.

I remember years ago when there was a photo of a woman. The face was gradually lightened, then darkened to see how people would react to the different skin tones. Maybe we should do the same thing with boobs - a photo inflating and then deflating. We could measure and decide at what point it becomes offensive. The only problem is what would we do about "man boobs". ?????

Worry about what?? I think people in the main should have choices, rather than our current minority leading the majority.
What is wrong with a firm sun-tanned body, looking in the mirror and having plucked turkey-white breasts springs to mind.
End of the day it is not turning men on, it is just winding up strange-thinking women who think that it is turning men on.

I worry because there are some unsavory characters. I worry because I'm an old grandma. I worry because that's me! But don't worry, I don't worry about them too much!

I don't care one way or the other. I'm fine either way. It would be a big adjustment for society and I think that's reflected in this thread. But what about the flashers and their raincoats? Where does that debate start?

Every day was a flasher in a raincoat when I was a kid. Poor guys, back from a five-year war, shell-shocked and lost souls.

What equal rights means to a woman is subjective, which is the whole purpose of this discussion. If you are told what it is supposed to mean to you by others, there really isn't much point in having your own brain. JMO.

lol..well if everyone was allowed to walk around with everything hanging out...there would no shock value for the flashers..:LOL:
Good point. I guess the issue I was addressing here isn't that everyone should be able to bare whatever they want, but simply that it seems discriminatory to allow it for men, but not for women. Does that make sense?

I am a bit of a libertarian, and don't understand why the government needs to be involved in deciding how we dress, or don't. I don't know what the laws are in Germany but when there I saw a lot of topless women and some full nudity at swimming areas. I never saw it on the street.
I don’t think it’s good idea cause it could cause accidents of all sorts... Car accidents, construction workers building houses wrong, cross walk guy not watching the children …
Maybe at first but once we got used to it that would probably change. From my experience the first few times I saw a topless woman on the beach I could not help being distracted, but I got used to it. I still have trouble trying not to stare when I see fully nude women in public, but that's probably because I have not seen many. My grandfather told me that when he was growing up seeing a woman's ankle was shocking, when he went to Atlanta as a kid he'd position himself at the bottom of stairs for the chance to glimpse an ankle. It's all what we are used to.
And that's why women should probably not bare their breasts.
It's not the problem of the women...it's that not all men are gentlemen.
Lots of reasons not to, but I think it should be the individual's choice not the government.
Just because something is legal doesn't mean it is advisable.
Absolutely!
What would be the advantage or the necessity?
Freedom from unnecessary laws and government intrusion.
In Genesis 3:21, we are informed that : "God made garments of skins for Adam and for his wife and clothed them."
Does it say they have to be worn all the time? Or specify what parts should be clothed?
women go topless, they get called all kinds of derogatory names
Not by me, but I do smile a bit more.

Happens a lot at Mardi Gras too, or so I'm told.
It does, I know from experience. Just a part of the party, and the women can be of any age, not just young and fit. I think that makes it more interesting. It is also mostly limited to the adult areas, never seen it out St Charles where families and kids go to watch the parades. And that happens without government regulation, just people with common sense. A favorite exchange between floats and the crowd is: "Hey throw me something Mr" response: "show me something sister" and it often happens.

Yep, all the more reason to let people make their own decisions.
On Gay Pride days, some of the women scare the hell out of me.
I'd like to see that, or think I would anyway. Maybe from a safe distance.

Enough of this, maybe its time to search the internet for some examples of what we are talking about. No topless beaches in Utah, well no real beaches for that matter. ;)

I was born and bred in Brighton, perhaps the Gay capital of Europe. On Gay Pride days, some of the women scare the hell out of me.
that's also very true....

Never been to a nudist resort, but from what little I've read, contrary to popular belief, the ones who do go there, don't go to ogle each other's bodies. They go there for the freedom to enjoy the outdoor environments and to just let their bodies breathe. It also has the interesting psychological effect of allowing people to come out of their shells. They don't hide behind their clothes.
There is a clothing optional resort not far from me. I've never been there either, but it is reported that their guests go there for the same reason. In fact, both places mentioned screen out people who they suspect may be going there for viewing.
