Should your state shelter border kids?

Our state hasn't been asked yet but the Governor says he would consider it. I am OK with it but I know some who aren't. Your thoughts on your state will be welcome and you can be honest...

Don't know what state you are in, but down by the border we don't have much say in the matter. ..
They keep on streaming in... Texas, Arizona, California.

Something that has always puzzled me... why doesn't New Mexico have any border issues ever??

I live in NM, & we have TONS of border issues. Where did you get the idea that we don't? Too many to go into in this forum. They opened a shelter in a federal training facility in Artesia for women & children, and some have been deported back from there already. Just saw in the paper today that an outbreak of chicken pox just started there. Zilch medical facilities in that part of the state. Trying to isolate those infected, vaccinate the rest. NM is a poor state, & can't possibly absorb any more of those folks into our economy.

My daughter teaches in a school literally full of kids of illegals, the parents themselves were never taught to have any respect for education or health care, example, one parent having a "curandera" treat an obviously schizophrenic child with spells & smoke. I think our govt should get tough with the ambassadors of the countries to our south & make them take their people back, & cut off ALL, & I do mean ALL, to every other country.

Yes, I admit to being afflicted with that increasingly growing ailment, "compassion fatigue."

I'm a long way from the border in RI but I spent some time down by the border in the service...

Thanks for enlightening me Geezerette. My ignorance is based on national news coverage, and I was just curious..
It didn't make sense to me.
And yes, the massive problem is out of control. It's a horrible mess and someone needs to take a stand now.
It's taking too long.

We need our US Armed Forces at the US border now, more so than into every other country's affairs..

Can't.

Lots of people saying stuff like "That dang ol' gub'mint needs ta do somethin' now!!!"... but they never say what.

There are a huge number of undocumented foreigners in this country. Several million. Even if it were possible to locate them, or even a large percentage of them, it would be a logistical nightmare to try to transport them back to wherever they came from. And the expense would be astronomical, especially when you take into account the fact that many of them would just come back again anyway. Which would of course mean that all the time & resources spent finding them & transporting them the first time, would have just been wasted.

I wonder how many of those who are up in arms over this issue, would advocate not only building a continuous (& massively expensive) barricade of some kind all along the 2,000 mile long southern border, but would also advocate placing armed National Guard troops at regular intervals along the entire length, 24/7/365 (who would be getting paid the entire time, of course) AND... giving them shoot to kill orders, including women, children, whatever. Would make no difference. Just tell em to keep them Mexy-kins outta our country!!!

Because honestly, that's the only way it would ever work.

I would be interested in seeing just how many "good, patriotic Americans" would be all for that. Even though it would mean that were acting like Iran, or Russia or China, etc.

I'm guessing more than a few.

Federal military forces have a long history of domestic roles, including the occupation of secessionist Southern states during Reconstruction. The Posse Comitatus Act prohibits the use of federal military forces to "execute the laws"; however, there is disagreement over whether this language may apply to troops used in an advisory, support, disaster response, or other homeland defense role, as opposed to conventional law enforcement.

I would deem the swarming influx of this large number of illegals a matter of homeland defense ...

Shouldn't even have to decide which states get these illegals. If they had actual legal status or came here legally they could decide on their own. Oooops, too late for that.

One thing to keep in mind. High immigration states have the highest number of food stamp recipients including California, Texas and Florida. These three states have a total of 12 million food stamp recipients. Not all might be immigrants but when a local economy become saturated wages and the number jobs go down. If these illegal immigrants become "legal" they will go out on the economy and get a legitimate above board job where?

Texas has an unemployment rate of just over 5%. Florida's is just barely over 6%.

Not bad, considering 7% or below is what is considered desirable.

Several problems with current unemployment numbers in general including the fact they don't include the under employed or those have dropped off the radar completely which usually means underground economy(no benefits, no taxes paid).

Also many illegal immigrants have already infiltrated the trade jobs like construction which lowers wages and eliminates apprenticeship programs-I know people who's first few years on the job was basic labor at 12-15$/hour. As soon as contractors started using illegals the salary of that same job was cut in half at least and he was let go. It also makes it easier for these same contractors to under bid their competition.

Rumors of immigration raids can shut down entire construction sites.

Point being the illegal immigrants have been and still are taking US jobs. Additional bodies saturate an already saturated job market.

One last note on the ideal unemployment. That number varies depending on the economist and/or government agency you talk to. Decades ago I was told about 3% was "ideal" unemployment for a good economy. There is a British economist William Beveridge who seems to agree.

The high food stamp rates in "desirable" unemployment rate states which are also high immigration states indicate under employment and/or a large underground economy if nothing else.
