Side of the Road Art

Somewhere in NM or TX, along I-10 or I-40, I ran across this little rest stop with no facilities. I enjoyed looking at these simple stucco inlays of southwestern life. There was also a mini windmill there (taller than a man) that I'll share in my next pics.

I ran across so many little rest stops when I was van-dwelling by choice for a year. Wish I had taken more pics. Living on the road is fun but most of the time you're just looking, living, surviving and not thinking about taking pics.

Very nice! I guess they were cemented, or something? Some look like they could be free-standing. Fun to walk along the paths of the inspirations of others.

I love to wander and take in the local culture. Those are interesting for sure.
 
Not really art and being right along the interstate and driving I couldn't get a photo.
After a tornado hit about 4 miles from me earlier this year it ripped a tarp or plastic signage for
a natural habitat area near. The half of the sign left after the storm passed said

Come Experience (jagged rip here)
Nature at it's best (rip continues)

the other half of the sign blew away, can't remember the whole saying prior to the storm.
 
This is the windmill at the rest stop that I promised to share. There was no sign or plaque with a history about its creation. The 2nd pic shows how the size compares with the shelters. I think the vanes are decorative and stationary. Get out, go places and see things, at least sometimes. You don't even have to go far like I did during my travels in the southwest. There are interesting and remarkable things to see in your area.

I guess you'd call it art..... When I was a kid, we'd drive through the mountains on the way to visit my grandparents in the summer. A lot of yards would display quilts for sale that the lady of the house had made. They wouldn't always be the tasteful patch-work type you see at quilt shows, but would be rather garish satin quilts in vibrant colors. For some reason, I had a burning desire to have one of those. I'd beg my mother to stop and buy me one, but I never got one. I just thought they were gorgeous.
 
I have a rustic side of the road quilt. It has birds and bears and pine trees. There was a town we passed through on our way up to the cabin back in my younger days before I lived here. They always had quilts hanging by the side of the road and I wanted so badly to have one. I was finally able to get one and I still treasure it.

There is an older gentleman who stacks rocks along the Humber River. I will have to dig up some photos I have, it sure takes patience and a steady hand.
