Since my return

R.I.P. With Us In Spirit Only
I have refrained from posting political opinion. I enjoy the more positive discussions where I don't offend or get offended. When you think about it we don't change any minds all we do is make enemies of people we might be friends with otherwise. Accordingly, to those who I might have offended and those who offended me, it's all in the past and let's start fresh.

I agree with you, Jim! I'm sick of politics anyway and you're right...nobody is going to have a change of mind. I'm very middle of the road in my views anyway so I don't even fit in with the liberal views or the conservative views.

The thing is why take a board primarily for we oldsters and axe potential friends over politics. If one wants to fight politics, there are forums for that. I don't see this board as that place.

Yep! No matter how most of the discussions start out...most end up with nastiness and name calling. If you're not one that's involved in it and are just reading the forum it's just plain ugly after awhile.

Its tempting sometimes to respond but then I think better not....I'll just go to bed angry at someone or myself for saying something negative and then I'll toss and turn and keep looking at the replies and on and on....I'm already dreading posting this, lol.

:sorry::lame::eek:hwell::peace::grouphug:

Excellent thread. I've been seriously considering banning politics again in the past weeks.

Politics is rude, hostile and confrontational in nature, it doesn't belong to a friendly forum. Although politics is just a small part of this board, the hard feelings generated by political debate will affect the whole forum very negatively.

Banning politics seems the only way to go...

I think the politics forum serves a useful purpose, as it gives some who do not have any other place to discuss politics a place to air their views.

I also feel that the way this board is set up, anyone who is upset by those political discussions can simply ignore that part of the forum.

Well...there are many on the forum that do like to talk politics.....I don't care for games or conspiracy threads or a few other topics, but I don't read them nor do I badmouth them...just pass them by and ignore....I would hope there is room for a variety of different things to talk about on this forum....as there has always been, and that is why the forum does so well IMO..I speak up when I see an out and out falsehood in politics...thats my way of righting a wrong...I believe not enough people speak up about what they believe in.

yes!!

It sure makes it simple for me. Unlike some members who go into miles and miles of posts yelling and screaming about politics,

I never bother to get into those threads. My TV and my newspaper tell me all I want to know concerning the "bad" government.

Saves me a lot of time by skipping them. This has always been a happy forum with friendly members.

There are many other forums that cater to politics.

I know some enjoy "discussing" politics and there are many forums that cater to that. I personally like to have a place that is free of it. Matrix, I know it's a tough call for you.

Somehow, some people have to interject a post about Trump into a thread about something else entirely. It's like an obsession.

I know! Somehow politics got dragged into my Martin Short thread (wth  ), so I had to do the ole 'clickaroo' (send to ignoreland).

Surprised Trump hasn't invaded my Bengal cats thread..........uhoh

I agree. Sometimes I take a time out just to regroup. Nobody has to view the political forum if they don't want to. I enjoyed the anti-Trump sub forum that used to be on SF about a year ago. It was a good way for Dems to share info without a lot of fighting with Repubs. Rather than eliminate the political forum entirely, it would be nice to see that sub forum resurrected. Just IMHO. :)

Matrix, IMO it won't help, but prove me wrong and please give it a try if you think it would work. It won't change my decision about this forum one way or the other now.

It's easy to blame presidential politics, because that is a subject you can easily start fights with. That is the main goal---find out who you don't like, and try to run them off, due to sheer exasperation.

A new divisive subject will pop up for the same purpose. You will then have to ban discussions about immigration, religion, abortion, Mexicans, ISIS, law and order, lgbt, ...etc.

Where you gonna draw the line?

Don't ban it - I read those threads for laughs.

Its really very simple! Just pass on by. I read and post. Sometimes I change my mind about a topic after reading others posts. For sure it gives me another perspective about it. Some of you act like you are forced to read the topic! Put some on ignore like I have done and go on your way!

I like the new you AZJim. And I like the idea of eliminating the politics forum. I think Matrix is right. Maybe replace it with an "Online Literature" forum with sub-forums for short stories, poetry, book reviews, and games related to those, etc. I've noticed some members have started their own personal book clubs in their profiles so there must be an interest for that.

Ditto...Plenty of other places on the net..

While I am reading and commenting on US politics I am refraining from alienating SF members by posting my opinion of US gun culture.

I agree with the poster who pointed out that if people want to be confrontational, there are plenty of other opportunities.
It's not the topic - i.e. politics - it is the mind set that wants to convert others to our particular POV or attempts to destroy their side of an argument with aggressive or passive aggressive posts.

Manners maketh civilisation IMO.

We all know I love the politics board. I am sure I am one of the posters that gives Matrix pause about retaining the section.
Of course my vote is to keep it. The dark place resides behind its own private gate clearly labeled,"Politics and Serious discussions", my view is that if you don't want to participate, don't open the gate.

What is politics any way? Government policy dictates every aspect of our lives. Is discussion of Health Care or Social Security political? School Curriculum, Speed Limits, Red Light Cameras, GMO food, any subject you can imagine is caused by or intertwined with politics. Where would the line be drawn? A discussion on almost any subject can lead into "politics"

I find the politics threads interesting but I have to say that I learn more about the people that post in the politics threads than I do about actual political issues.

If you honestly feel that banning the politics section is the way to go then how about experimenting with a temporary ban until HiDesertHal comes back in November. :eek:nthego:

One of the great things about this forum is the variety of topics. I enjoy a lot of the discussions about different things, including politics. But I probably spend more time in the Games topic than anything else. Why ban a topic just because people feel strongly about defending their position? As long as people aren't abusive toward each other, what's the harm? I think it serves a needed function and sometimes it does give us insight into how other people are thinking.

I agree with that and although I'm not into posting on politics that much, I do love music. So here's my contribution of politics intertwined with music. Thank you, Johnny Cash.
