Sleep! Sleep! Sleep! Feeling tired? Sleeeeep!

I am usually to bed around 8 pm and up at 4:30 am. Then on the go all day. But, this past year (I am 75) I've been getting sleepy after lunch. I've fought it. Only to feel draggie all afternoon. Does anyone feel a nap time in the afternoon? Do you fight it? How? Watching my eyelids means burning daylight. I am wasting my retirement. Or is this how it is supposed to be?
"Is this how it's supposed to be?"

I think so.

You get 8 hours sleep at night. Now that you're 75 and you don't store energy as well as when you were younger, maybe you need a total of 10.

If you'd rather not get an extra hour or two of sleep, vitamin B12 (in liquid form) will boost your energy, but in my opinion, you should give your body what it needs; take the naps.

Having a hard time staying up past 8:30pm because I am BORED and can't take another minute of it. Nothing seems interesting enough to stay out of bed for. I don't like this. Guess I get tired of my own company after spending all day with me and need a break. Listen to TV in bed, bad stuff, the news channel; if I wake up during night I switch TV to meditation music till I'm up for the day.
TV in the sleeping room is a huge mistake. Stop watching TV, PC, notebook, tablet and even cell phone at least one hour before going to sleep. I also take melatonin (4 to 5 mg).

I've come to realize that I no longer snap out of slumber to full alertness... have I been fooling myself that I ever did?

I suppose lots of us need someone to watch over us.

Thank you, everyone, for your interesting and helpful suggestions and anecdotes. I don't feel I am quite so alone in dealing with this thing called 'old age'. Many 'guided me through' my youth and adulthood. But, old age is a mystery. (Isn't that strange?) Thank you.

Sometimes I nap in the afternoon and sometimes when I want to feel less tired in the afternoon I postpone eating till later after I've done the things I need to do.

I started having the same problem a few years ago, so I took my doctor’s advice and had a sleep study done. They determined that because I worked so many years on the overnight shift (my choice) my circadian rhythm was thrown off balance.

They recommend either taking NyQuil or Zzzquil for a few months to try and get it back in balance or rhythm.

I don't have problems sleeping. My problem is I go to bed too early because I'm bored to tears of my own company. I like the TV on, no problems there. I live alone, find human voices soothing.

Science proves everything you say is truth, but it all works against me.
I need the tv on when I go to bed, otherwise the screaming in my ears is deafening. PBS Kids works for me. The sound of kids is always soothing to me. A channel like this never has any of the worlds problems on them.
I used melatonin for a week and threw it away. I would wake up groggy and my dreams wouldn't fade. Some dreams were upsetting.
I also take a 20 minute "power nap" almost daily. My hobbies use sharp tools, and you can't be "off" when using them.

This feels like an area where confirmation bias rules. That's not negative either way, I suppose I'm trying to say to use what works for you.
